Feeling kinda dumb.. HI there. I have a question but i feel kinda dumb asking, because (Not to be conceited or anything) I feel that at the age of 15 i am pretty well educated about dogs and different breeds from Caucasian Ovcharkas to chi's, but i didnt know that yorkies are proned to Colapsed tracheas ?? Which I feel I should know, being a yorkie owner and all the research i have done never stated this about the breed. Okay so hears my problem. Im pretty paranoid when it comes to my dog. I dont think she would EVER run away from me or not come when called but I have to keep her collar on at all times, day or night because her tags are on it. She is chipped but so many people today still dont know about microchipping and some wouldnt even bother to get a found dog scanned for one. So i keep her tags on because if found my number is right there for the person that found her if she ever ran away. But will just her wearing a collar cause this? She doent walk with her collar but with her harness.. Will it cause her problems?? Its pretty loose, but not loose enough that she can get it off.. |
What does tracheal collapsemean to your dog & you? Affected dogs typically have a harsh, dry "honking" cough, that is paroxysmal in nature and gradually becomes worse over time. The cough may be brought on by excitement, exercise, pressure on the trachea (such as is caused by pulling on a leash, or an enlarged heart), or drinking or eating. |
I don't think just wearing the collar will hurt her, but if it is too loose, it could get caught on something and thhat could choke her. You could consider a break away cat collar. That would help if she gets caught on something, but if she gets loose, if could potentially break off and then she wouldn't have her ID with her. I put Tucker's tags on his harness. His has too metal loops on either side around where his shoulders are. Could that work for you? |
Having your Yorkie wear a collar isn't an issue at all. No more than it is for any other dog. The risks are the same. Have your vet evaluate your Yorkie. He'll feel the structural integrity of your pups trachea. If it's well structured and thick, I wouldn't worry in the slightest, no more than you would any of your other dogs. But if your Yorkie already has been discovered to have a thin or weak trachea, a low lying harness, one that's non-sternal might be best for him/her. |

If she were to get caught up in something and had to break the collar free there would still be a chance we could get her back with posters, her microchip or maybe a friend would find her. So thanks for the idea! I hope it doesnt cause her problems in the future. YOu think its worth talking over with the vet?? |
It's worth talking to your vet about him paying careful attention to her trachea the next time he examines her. When he rubs past it from left to right, does it click out from under the pressure of his finger as he slides from one side to the other, or is there really nothing there at all? You should feel the trachea shift firmly out from beneath your finger. The break away cat collar is only a good idea if you have other identifiable means on your dog. Be it a tattoo (like your phone number) and/or a microchip. Which when scanned will give the reader a number. The person scanning your dog now can call a number given for that brand of chip and get the info on file located at a national database center. Essentially your dog has a prison number. That has saved several of my dogs that were lost on flights. |
