Roxy is going to be spayed ! I'm a wreck! I have to drop her off Monday morning. My older dog is now 12 years so I don't remember her having a problem, but I would like to know what to look for or keep track of. Eating, drinking, etc. I bought her a onsie to keep on her, she won't jump with it on, I have been trying it out. The vet says I can bring her home Monday nite, but she's so small, 41/2 lbs. He is a small animal vet, and I have used him for years for all my animals. I'm just worried about her pee/poo and if and when she should go. Should I keep her schedule as usual? I don't care if she does it on the floor as long as she goes, and drinks. I have never had this small of a dog, she will also have 3 teeth pulled. Should I get soft food? Any help is appreciated ! Thanks |
She should pee by the next morning and poop within a couple days. The vet will probably tell you no food that night or maybe start with 1/2 of a meal. Anesthesia can make them nauseous. Low blood sugar shouldn't be a huge concern because she should be on fluids at the vet. Placing an IV before surgery, doing preop blood work, doing surgery on a heated surface and using the correct kind of anesthesia (Isoflurane or Sevoflurane to maintain) will reduce the risks involved. |
Dont worry iam sure everything will be fine!! Wishing Roxy a speedy recovery!!! just plenty of T.L.C. which I know she will get lots of!!! Love WendyX Fifi:animal36 And Lulu:animal36 |
I know how scary it is to leave them for their spay. But she will do fine and be home before you know it. She will probably be a little sleepy for a day or so but they bounce back so quickly. Let us know when she is home. |
Its like your Roxy is my Bella's twin! I just got Bella spayed last Monday and she is also 4.5lbs and she had to have 3 canines removed. I'm glad to hear you have the onesie...that was THE most important thing for Bella...and she also wore a cone at points. As far as eating, I left my Bella on her standard kibble and just added warm water to it in order to make it more appealing and so that it wouldn't irritate her gums. I did not feed her until 8pm the night of her surgery. And I only gave her 1/2 the amount that she usually has. My vet said the trick to avoiding a really upset stomach is to give her a very small amount of food...wait 20 minutes and se how she handles it. If she still appears to be hungry give her more otherwise just keep her hydrated. Bella actually went to the bathroom as usual, but my vet gave me the same information that Ellie May posted. And she was completely back to herself in two days. The vet even suggested that I take her off her meds because she healed so quickly. Hope this helps! :) And I know that your little Roxy will be just fine! |

Lexi was spayed in September. She was 3.1 pounds, and she did fine! I was crying there, and walking out, and on the way to work... When I picked her up that night, she was happy to see us. The vet handled her almost as if nothing had happened. I tried to be very gentle, and nothing really seemed to bother her. We brought her home, and she was very sleepy. She did pee in her pan (she is litter pan trained), and she ate and drank. Despite having some teeth pulled, she ate her hard kibble with no problems. I remember she had slight diarrhea, maybe twice. It was probably actually more of a softer, slightly runny poop than diarrhea. The next morning when I came down, she rolled on her back to get her belly rubbed! She was slower than usual and still sleepy that day, but walking around fine. By the third day, you wouldn't know she had gone through anything at all! I never needed a onesie or collar, thankfully. I know you are worried, but chances are you will be srurpsied at how well everything goes! |
Good Luck to Roxy on her surgery! |
I sympathise I really sympathise with you - my lil Lucy is booked in on Jan 5th to be spayed, and I'm just as worried as you. I know, in my 'rational head', that everything should be fine - but I can't help being anxious. I've bought some onesies (pretty pink ones, to make her feel better), rather than having her wear a collar, and have read up quite a lot on the op / post-op stuff. But I'm her mummy and she's my baby, so it'll be hard to be without her overnight (my vet likes to keep little ones in for at least 24 hours) - and it'll also be hard to see her drowsy and feeling sorry for herself. |
