Pet Names - what's your choice? Hi, everyone I was talking to a friend recently about how we name our pets, and we recognised that there seems to be a clear divide between 'human' names and 'thing' names. As an example, I seem to have gone through two distinct phases. I started with 'things': Friday, Domino, Humbug, Willow, Bramble and Toff. More recently, I've had 'human' names: Beth, Fritz and Lucy. Anyone else wonder why this is? Anyone got a preference / rationale for our choice of names? |
Most of my pets have had human names....... there were a few that didn't, but even the horses we had when I was growing up had "call names" that were human. I can't think of a name that isn't human that would suit Shelby or Seymour.... |
rebel,gypsy holly,noel, meiling,Little louie, teddy, Ikaika, Nohea, |
Hi! it always takes me time to get to know my little ones!! then I decide!! If they are cheeky, sweet, or little monkeys!! the name then comes to you!! and fits thier personality, just perfect!!! Love WendyX Fifi:animal-pa And Lulu:animal-pa |
I always seem to go with off the wall names... right now I have Princess Jezebella Jambo and JuJu (my parrot) in the past I have had Countash, VaydaLynn, Dixie, Lucky, Maisy, Precious, Zamboni.... and I could keep going. lol. I like names that are unique :) |
Names My cats over the years-- Muffin, Puffy, Misty,Trouble, Pookey, Emily, Callie, Bad Kitty(named appropriately). My dogs-- Ralph (a rehomed little girl poodle, who came with her name), Frank E. Footer (Frankie), Bella, and in February or March a new little boy yorkie I want to name Snorkey (Family says I am crazy) LOL.:aimeeyork |
I always prefer to name pets something that I would never name a human. Such as Rascal and Shimmer :D But I love all dogs regardless of their name! ;) |
I guess I lean mostly to human names. My first dog was a beagle named "Mike". Then we have had Bouncer, Roughy & Ready (sibling hounds), Sam, Trish, Camille, Heidi, Obie, Bruiser, Candy, Barney, and now we have a Mickey, Katy Lou, and a Sophie Mae. |
Most of my animals have had "thing" names... here is the list of the animals I've had in my life time that had names. I also have had frogs and lizards and other things that were never named. Cats: Squeaker Mojo Trixie Dogs: Spice Lancelot (Lance) Chip Smokey Hamsters: Taffie Biscuit Chessie Cookie Shadow Twinkie Bandit Aubrey Precious Evie Fish: 7 named after Little Mermaid characters (I was 3 lol) Nemo Rabbits: Hershey Marshmellow (Marshie) Mice: Zues Hercules |
Hmmm... I never noticed but all my dogs always pretty much had people names Prissy was a Pug I had The Toby was a Lhasa and Mike and Zach are my two Yorkies |
We have; Tyler- Basset Hound Tucker- Yellow Lab Taylor- new baby yorkie Gracie- bird Anna Bell - guinea pig |
Human names...I guess. lol Yorkie (Bella) Guinea Pig (Ringo...what can I say...I was young :p lol) Frog (Kermit) Lizard (Bob) And I plan to name my next yorkie boy Barkley |
Hmm... Current pets: Penny (Yorkie) Timothy (Siamese cat) Benjamin (cat) Past pets: Kelly (golden retriever) Jamie (cat) Pepper (cat) Ib (hamster) Kaiakua (fish) Kupo, Stitch, MaeMae, Noe, Whiskers, Stubb, Pippin, Merry, Ostrich, and Pudge (rats) Ping (mouse) Sydney, Chico, Rocky, Kiwi (birds) Dolly (salamander) ... I don't really have any sort of theme. It seems like things that tend to live longer, I give human names, while things that live less than ten years I get more creative with. ;) |
I was thinking mostly human names...but after going back in the past I'm realizing most are not human.... Current Pets: Yorkie-Gracie Aussie-Izzy Macaw-Tiah Amazon parrot-Chili Pepper Past Pets: Sheltie-Cassie Irish Setter- Brandy Irish Setter - Aragon Cat - Spook Cat - Clover Sheltie - Hutch Fish: Harley Goldie Hot Lips Zorro |
I had a Shih tzu, Casey, and my Yorkie is Lexi. For Lexi, I was thinking of all kinds of names, and I like clever or somewhat unusual - non-people names. I can only think that for me, I probably ended up with a people name because I knew she would be such a member of our family - like the other people in our family. Current guinea pigs: Chloe Cleo (short for Cleopatra, came from the rescue with that name) Claire (came from the rescue with the name "Skunky", but I had to change it!) Milkshake just passed a week or two ago. She was adopted, already named. Abby passed a year and a half ago. She was an Abyssinian guinea pig, hence her name! Past guinea pigs: Piglet (Piggy) Wiglet (Wiggy) Ziggy Oreo Sirena and too many others I can't remember now! Current bird: Kiwi Past birds: Jellybean Tweety |
I tend to lean towards human names. My dogs are Chloe & Sydney. My sons have a hampster they named Ninja. |
I always prefer human names I like to give my dogs somewhat unique, classy names. I don't particularly care for silly names. I had two Dobermans: Natasha and Nikea. Two Pit Bulls: Gracie and Axl. One Miniature Pinscher: MacKenzie. |
very interesting.. we have our baby girls, Avery & Gemma :heart to at my mom's there is Lexi & Haley. my dad's dogs are Rasta & Muscles. growing up, we had: Star, Sky, Lady, Molly, Madison, Tonka. |
I prefer human name...preferably English sounding. Spencer and Winston... |
for me it really depends on their looks and personalities. I've had four dogs so far: Shorty, Rainer, Dolly and Chipper. Rainer and Dolly are the yorkies, and both of them are quiet, calm, well, girlie girls, so I gave them girlie names. Shorty is my gal chi, but she is the townboy type, and Chipper is the only boy that I've had so far, and oh boy, don't I know the difference! |
We've had a nice variety of both in my family. But its always a discussion and a debate between family members to get to a final name. We've had-- Isis Oats P.C. (perfectly cooked, named so for his nice golden brown color:rolleyes:) Angel Tuffy Theadora (Teddy) Mason Morgen Candy Cane Piggly and currently Walker McLovin Hill |
Mine have been: Pepper, Dobie, Susie, Muffin, Jasper, Scooter and Bailey. Some of them I named and some were named by my daughter. Since she has married hers have been: Clyde, Lucky, Pepper, Cotton, Poochie, Sally and Saba. |
I like Earth names like of course my lil Canyon, but I like River and Aspen but I like Journey and Jordan too. |
I tend to name my puppies human names. I Have a thing for last names too, even with my children.. Mason.. son #1 Kennedy.. son #2 Lincoln.. son #3 Garrett.. son #4 Jeter.. Yorkie #1 Axl.. Yorkie #2 Yumi Yasha.. Yorkie #3 ( and only girl ) |
My pets have had a mix of names... Dogs: Amber(golden retriever), Lucy(yellow lab), Daisy (yorkie), and a new yorkie next month will be Hamlet Cats:LC (we found him, and his name stands for lost cat), Elroy (Himalayan) Morgan Horses: Their barn names have been Tyson and Cameo I also had a bunch of fish that wee never named and two leopard geckos who I called Greg and Garry. |
Fish- Cant remember there names:confused: (It was a long time ago, but i know they werent people names) Dogs- Jessie- Samoyed Husky Keely-Yorkie baby Ducks- Daisy Daffy Butch Hampster- Sophie Mice- Jesse willis Tinkerbelle Snowflake Snowball Bart And 23 babies taht the new owners named after they left my home. Turtle- Rocky Cats- Scamper Sam Sadie Horse- Scarlett These animals are past and present pets. When i get a male german shepherd I plan on calling him Matrix. Im not sure why but I love that name for a GSD? I also want a male GSD named Max And a girl named chloe..lol and I want to adopt a tripod pittbull and call her sammie..lol.. I know, Im weird.. |
Thinking back on it all, most of them seem to have more human names than anything. Current yorkie - Deegan (named after a mx rider) German Shepard - Zena Shelties - Elly, Tai & Mickey My mom liked "thing" type names: German Shepard - Sassy Mixed breed - Sugar Mixed breed - Biscuit |
We are big Jimmy Buffett fans.....thus Lil Mis Magic, Sailor and Captain Tony (AKC name - Ch Last Mango in Paris). So does that put me in the "things" category instead of "people"? |
My pets have a mix of human and thing names I think, but most of my animals now have human names. At least the dogs and cats anyway... Past pets - Golden retrievers: Bella and Vito Beagles: Rebel and Lucky Collie: Barney Husky: Ghost Chow mix: Rosie Cocker Spaniel: Snickers Cattle Dog: Bullitt Tortoiseshell Tabby: Jasmine Gray Tabby: Aladdin Black Hamster: Grimm Current pets - Yorkie: Ollie (Oliver) Calico: Samantha Goldfish: Digger, J, Silent Bob, Twitch Siamese fighting fish: Sushi |
My two dogs have human names, Jordan & Garrett (we didn't name Jordan, the breeder did, but we like it just fine!). Since I had to leave both of my dogs with my family when I moved out (they're family dogs and I moved out of state), I plan on getting my own yorkie soon, and he will be named Frank. :) I don't know why I prefer human names to things names, but I think it's funny to see this cute little dog with a dignified old man name. |
