Any advice? Neither my mom or I have attempted to clip a dogs nails before. We are both too nervous about it. But I would like to start doing it myself because her nails grow like weeds and Its hard to get an appointment with her froomer, or any groomer for that matter. Does anybody have any advice for me as to how to go about it? Because yorkies have black nails, its hard to see the quick, and that is nerve wrecking in itself. Anything i could do to ensure a sfe cut? Any recommended tools for the clipping? My cousin has the pedipaw but keely is afraid of it so getting one of those machines is out of the question. First of all I find I have to make my male stand. If he is on my lap he fights me so hard I can't do it but if he has to stand he can't fight to hard. I only nip the very end... I read you can do this every few days so if your dogs nails are long, just nip the tips, every 3-4 days and over time they will get shorter... It also may help to wet the feet so the hair can get brushed away and you can see better what you are doing!!! Best of luck! |
Good luck! I think the hardest part can be getting your babies to hold still. Mine all have different tricks that work. With Kirby, as soon as I place him in the tub, he kind of gives up. Clip, clip, clip and he's done. Ginger requires two of us (the little monkey). With Bernie, it works best to wrap him in a towel (like a baby), hold him on my lap, free just one paw and go to work. As far as the black nails go, I use a clipper with a little stopper on it, so that I can't clip really far...then if they have gotten long, I clip again a couple of days later. If you do cut the quick, don't panic, just have quick stop or even corn starch handy. If you're calm, they'll be fine. Again, good luck! |
You've gotten great advice so far. Only one of my babies 'hates' getting his nails trimmed so I stand him up at my bathroom sink where he doesn't have much room to wriggle about and has to concentrate on balancing while I lift up one foot at a time. As for knowing when you're close to the quick - I do a small cut and then look at the surface - a black dot will appear in the middle of the cut area when you are close to the quick so you don't want to cut too much past that or it will bleed. |
Nails My boy has always hated getting his nails trimmed. He starts singing a song before I even touch his nails. So I bought a mini cordless dremel. And when I sand every nail I give him a piece of chicken. He just lays on his back and lets me sand down his nails now. He might squeak once or twice but I just give him another treat. He is doing real well at hardly makes a sound anymore. I recommed the dremel and positive reinforcement. It is working for me. :D |
LOL "singing a song" - yep, that is what my boy does when I try to use the Pedi-Paws on him! Olivia just stands there so nice...but not him! I'll have to try the treats and I really think he might do better with clipping - if I can get up the nerve to try it! :eek: Quote:
