Grrrrr matts in hair!!! As i posted yesterday i cut baileys hair last nite hehe and i did a good job. 2day i went to brush him and he has loads of matts on his back legs and a few under his tummy and chest and a few on his front legs and tail ~sigh~ so i gave him a bath and covered him in conditioner and tried to comb them out but he wouldnt keep still an was really yelping and i could see it was really hurting him so in the end i stopped. what do i do now? he looks ok to look at him. will they be hurting him? He seems fine but just knowing they are there is annoying. Anyone know how to get them out without hurting him? HAHA i've done loads of posts of late askin questions i dunno what i'd do without u lot hehe! xxx |
Eep! Thats a big mistake I made when I first got my Bella. The trick is to comb BEFORE the fur gets wet, or else it will make it 10x harder to comb out. Try using a slicker comb. But make sure you get it all out before making him wet. It isn't like our hair where if we put conditioner, you can feel your hair loosening up, its different and really the opposite! :o My first mistake I had to get Bella shaved down due to all the Matts, so hopefully me telling you this will avoid that. |
Gucci and I went through this last night, HE NEVER MATTS but I ALSO BRUSH HIM DAILY... well me being the smart mommy I am .. I decided to skip brushing him for 2 nights because I have been super busy with X-mas wrapping.. and guess what?? WE HAD MATTS on his back and front legs only THANK GOODNESS... So he went crazy at first .. I got out the cheerios and broke them in 4ths sat down on the floor and gently brushed in a picking like motion going upwards against the matts not with them and he didn't cry at all. I gave him a 1/4 of a cheerio and patted him with a good boy everytime he didn't try and jump away. Maybe you can try that...:D |
Buddy Splash from Cloud Star www.cloudstar.com willeven work when you have bathed & dried/ You may be able to find it at a local store. You have to be patient, it will take time. Spray a small section and then brush, it will be a repeated process, and give everyone a break you have to/ I have also heard cornstarch, but have not tried it myself |
Roxy get's them in her leg and belly area. If they are too bad I just cut them off. I keep her hair short anyway because she looks soooo cute, I don't know how the one's with long hair do it, I know I couldn't ! But, I brush her everyday because she loves it, and befor a bath, and after she's blown dry, and befor bed, and while she's sleeping, OMG!!!...I guess I just brush all the time.......lol |
Sadie has a silk coat and she matts often... I take a scissor and cut through the knot. I make a few cuts... than I comb it out. You can't see where it's been cut because it blends in. Instead of cutting the knot across where you might see a chunk... cut down and though, like the scissors where facing the floor. It works well and you can still keep their hair a bit longer and cute! Best of luck! |
We have had to learn the hard way about the matts too. Reggie got shaved 2 days before Thanksgiving because he was matted underneath his top hairs. He is 3/4 Yorkie and 1/4 Lhasa and the Lhasa in him makes his hair a little more fuzzy at the skin kinda like an undercoat. We thought we were doing good keeping him brushed out but the groomer told us the brush we were using was only getting to the top hairs and not the hairs underneath. She had no choice but to shave him. My avatar photo was taken right after he was shaved. His hair is growing in now though and here he is on Christmas looking better. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...g?t=1230308781 http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...g?t=1230308820 |
My daughter's silky terrier gets matted very quickly. I told her I had read on yt about using cornstarch; she tried it and said it worked really well so you might want to give it a try! |
My groomer told me today to spray leave-in conditioner on the brush before every daily brushing, and as the others said - brush dry, not wet. How does the cornstarch work? Do you sprinkle it right on the coat? |
