Need Advice- This poor baby I put an add online about wanting a Yorkie. I got a reply. This is what it said. 3 year old male, not neutered, named McQueen I called the girl back and this is what she told me. I got him from a friend of a friend who could not take him to her new place to live. She did not know the last time he had been to the vet, or if he was registered. She said the girl had moved and never gave her any of his information. She said she thought he was full blooded, but was not positive. She also said he weighed about 4 to 5 lbs. He is layed back and very cuddly. When I asked her why she was rehoming him, she said that she took him and thought she could give him the attention that he needs. She babysits at her home and has another bigger dog and cat, and has found she does not have time for him. She was asking $200 for him. I asked her, considering he would have to be vetted immediately, if she would take less. She did not hesitate. She immediately dropped down to $125 with no arguments. She told me I could come to her home and get him today if I wanted him. What would you think in this situation? He is located just south of Indianapolis, Indiana. I feel so sorry for him. I have a picture if anyone would like to see it. It is too big for this site Please advise on what you think. |
Pics I have uploaded a picture of McQueen in my album. Does he look full blooded to you? |
I would probably go see the pup if you are looking to adopt. Also keep in mind that he may need more than the normal check up because it has been a while. Also I would be worried about the pup bring stolen...it does seem like she just wants to be rid of the pup... But then again everything can check out and you may be saving this pup from a life of being tossed from one home to the next. Good luck! |
Maybe you should rescue this poor baby boy! Sooooo sad to hear about this situation, with the people that have had him. Sounds like he really needs a good, loving home, poor baby! I am astonished that they have no info on his history, something seems to be a little fishy... Poor little boy! |
If you can afford extensive vet costs (it's best to assume that is what it is going to be since you know nothing about the parents or this dog's history), I think it would be a good idea to rescue him. :) |
i would check the craigslist listings in that area to see if theres any missing yorkies. Id hate to think that this dog was stolen...but.....there has been cases like that. Has this person taken the dog to the vet at all? If so..ask if you can speak to the vet first and see if there are any serious problems with the dog. |

He looks full blooded to me... Sounds like the possibility of him being stolen could be real. You could go check it out and go with your gut feeling. You very well could be saving him from a worse outcome. Check the lost and found, Craig's list, etc... for anyone that has lost a yorkie. ( it could be him ) |
I think the fact that you can go to her home & meet him (& her) is a positive. |
I think you should rescue the little guy. Sound like he needs a stable home. The story sounds okay to me. Just sounds like she wanted the dog, but maybe it was too much for her. If she was just out looking for a buck, then she would probably charge more. Also, it is good you can go to her home to see him. |
Poor baby is right. I hope that is an old picture. With a haircut like that in the weather they are having he could be in even worse shape. He does look purebred to me. I'd go look at him, check Craig's list as suggested, but see if this boy needs to be rescued. Good luck to both of you. |
He looks all Yorkie to me! I would go and get him and give him the most wonderful life that he deserves... For $125 I don't think you can go wrong. "If" he were stolen, you may be his only hope :( You could get him and if it winds up that he was stolen, I am sure the original owners would gladly refund you (I know I would) - BUT - if he is just in need of a Good Home, then give it to him  ...someone is going to grab him for $125 and they might be horrible to him :( Think of it as you 'adopted' him from a shelter... |
I'm thinking with her lowering the price that quick, and him not being neutered, that he's probably marking all over the house. I know I wouldn't want a male that was marking or peeing all over |
update I just spoke to the girl about him again. I asked her if he is potty trained and she told me that he does go outside, but occasionally tries to mark in the house if not watched carefully. She also let it be known that since she has a bunch of kids running around her house, she keeps him crated most of the day when people are there. I have one question. Is it possible to break a 3 year old baby from marking in the house? I feel so sorry for him. Today is my 14 year old sons birthday. He took one look at McQueen's sad little eyes and handed me $50 of his birthday money and said "Mom he looks so sad. Let's make today his new birthday and get him". I am so torn. I don't know what to do! The only issue I have is with the marking. She also told me that picture was taken about a month ago. Please help!! |
I hope you go get him, that is a precious little boy who needs some loving. I don't know about marking in a dog but I have a male cat who was spraying (I got him around the age of four years old). I had him fixed and the spraying did stop. I hope you get him, I will worry about that sweet little dog. |
For the occasional marking like you said, a belly band would work great for training! I think some YT people make them. Or if you dont have access to a pet store that sells belly bands: a temporary fix, you could try a baby onesie. Just put it on backwards so the tail sticks out between the snaps. Plus, they look really cute in them. |
If you get him, the first thing I would do is have him neutered. Then, really start working him with lots of love, praises and treats on housebreaking. |
Neutering may help, but since he is three, he will probably continue marking after being neutered. In this case, it's best to assume the worst and ask yourself if you can live with a dog that marks. As Crystal said, expect that he will have some vet bills upfront - neutering, perhaps a dental, vaccinations, bloodwork, etc. Also expect that he may have luxating patellas since they are so common. Again, it's best to think worse case as far as money upfront. Since you don't know his background, you may face other health issues down the road. If you are prepared to deal with his marking and expect some significant vet bills, I think adopting this guy is a wonderful idea. Lady is a rescue and although she costs me a fortune in vet bills, she is worth every penny. You've never been loved until you've been loved by a rescue IMO. |
Hi to a fellow Hoosier! As far as marking, my recently rescued little guy is about 5 yrs old; foster mom had him neutered right before I got him. She said he did mark before neutering but almost totally stopped after that. I keep a belly band on him if I can't closely watch him, and I've only seen two spots on it that were probably marking (not enough for pee). Also my daughter's silky terrier was the worst dog I have ever seen for marking when she first rescued him! He would literally run through the living room with his leg lifted, leaving a trail of marking on the sofa or any other vertical object! It was crazy...but as soon as he was neutered he almost totally stopped marking. Of course, like another post said - you do have to be prepared just in case. Belly bands are wonderful! He might be micro-chipped which would help if he has been stolen...the vet could tell you that. Either way, it's an opportunity to rescue this little guy. So sweet that your son is willing to spend his birthday money to help...what a wonderful, caring thing to do. Let us know what happens! |
Use a belly band. They are easy and fool-proof for a male that is marking. I have a stud male and he thinks he needs to mark everything now. I don't want to fuss at him all the time, so I use a belly band. You can get them at the pet store or here on YT. If that is your only concern -- go get him.:) |
Like everyone said... BELLY BANDS! One of my boys marks and I'm going to make my own. |
How sweet :) Quote:
