Anti-Social Okay, Sylar is by no means anti-social. He'll jump and sniff other dogs and sniff people. He gets really excited but sometimes if we're out for a walk he barks at other dogs. He went to his first puppy class yesterday and everything was fine. When we got into the training area the puppies were let loose and free to run around and play. There was a German Shepherd puppy, Hound, miniature Pincher, Chihuahua, etc. Sylar went right in the mix and tried to play with them and of course all the puppies are excited..well one stepped/trampled over Sylar and after that for the rest of the class he hid in between people's legs or only tried to play with people. Any chance this was a one time fluke? |

They're clumsy and it's really easy for them to knock a smaller dog down, and the rest of the dogs will trample your dog. He'd probably be ok, one on one, but in a group it can be dangerous. Just let him near the dogs one on one, maybe going early and interacting with a dog before class would help. You can also ask about a training class that has more small dogs in it. By the way, it's very normal for him to bark at other dogs when he goes on walks. It's his way of protecting you. |
I am sure you puppy will be okay. Let me tell you a funny story about my Sophie and her first Puppy Class. There was a larger puppy in the class "Tux" well little Sophie was buddying up to Tux and he hiked his leg and pee'd on her. Next week Sophie was right back buddying up with old Tux. Either it was was a temporary set back or Sophie is just not smart enough to know not to get in the way of a dog hiking his leg. |
lol ... poor little guy This won't turn into a big deal if YOU don't make it one If you become apprehensive when bigger dogs are around He's gonna pick up on that apprehension as sure as hell Just bring him back and make no big deal as far as barking at other dogs .... when on a leash that's a behavior problem that Mom can correct Bring some treats with you when you see a dog coming ... let him see and put you hand down with the treat inside so he won't be able to get it as the dog passes.... open your hand and tell him what a good boy he is |
I went to Petsmart to see about the classes they have. I was a bit worried about Suri getting injured by bigger dogs, on accident. The trainer told me that they try to match up the pups with each other and it is best to get her use to larger dogs before they get to old. The trainer said it is more for interaction and getting the dog to pay attention to you in a environment with distractions . I told him Suri's age and he told me she would be in a beginners class, but once he saw how small she was he said it might be better to put her in a puppy class. |
