I did it! but what now? I usually go to the groomer and get chewy done all cute, but I did it myself this time and he looks great! it was so much easier than I thought it would be! How do i cut his nails? |
What color are his nails? There are some tools available depending on how gutsy you are. |
they are black. and long right now, and i just feel so bad for them! i dont know what to use or how short to go, i know too short and hurt |
I have the exact same problem. Tulsa needs his nails clipped so badly..but I am afraid to hurt him. How do you tell when the nails are black? |
Right this minute - I promise - a commercial came on tv for Pedi-Paws! LOL Anyway, that is what I use and it works well for Olivia. My new rescue, however, does not like it at all...and his nails are black so I'm afraid to cut them. I'm curious to hear how you can tell what you are clipping, when they are black. |
maybe file them with a nail file just to take the edge off until you can get them done proffesionally |
I am not an expert but I say less is more. I just take off the very tip. I do it often maybe every 2 weeks or so. I can tell when they have to be cut because I can hear them "clicking" on the hard floor. I also don't want to hurt them or make them bleed, but I think a little at a time. I hope somebody has a better answer for you... I haven't cut Lexi's nails, but I do cut my guinea pigs' nails. Some are white, so I can see okay. The ones that are black, I err on the side of caution and I just don't cut very low on those. I also have a container of styptic powder in case I cut too low. Before cutting, I always get out the powder, a cup of water, and some q-tips, so I am ready. Good luck, and congratulations on your grooming success. I am lucky if I can get a few strokes of the brush through Lexi's hair! |
Nail trimmers can be bought anywhere. Just be very, very careful. Their nails are black and its hard to see where the quick is... if you cut too far in you can actually cut his inner nail and he'll bleed (and hurt!) really bad :( Good luck! |
I have 2 yorkies, a border collie cross and a cat and I do all their nails myself and they all have black nails! I don't cut alot and I make sure I cut at an angle to the floor. I cut just the tip where the nail starts to curve. I always have my steptic powder by my side though, just in case!;) |
I use the pedipaws on mine. At first they just were leary until the treats came out....then wanted a treat every other nail  so it works for us. Before I did it the first time though I got their nails clipped at the groomer than just maintained them. I was to afraid to just file to far down the first go round. |
I've recently started dremelling my 2 dogs nails and I'm finding that I prefer it to clipping. They both like it too! I think the pressure of the clippers was uncomfortable for them, even though I never hit the quick. |
