We all know what would happen, every irresponsible pet owner would drag their out of control dog to the mall. Pretty soon we would hear on the news about someone being attacked at the local Walmart because a customer brought a dog into the store and there was a fight over the last box of cookies in aisle 6:p.


I agree that yorkies do not cause a lot of allergy problems BUT what about other dogs that are very much the cause of allergies? Let's not talk about cats because before long the cat lovers would want to bring their cats. Then I wouldn't be able to go to the mall because I am so allergic that I would be hauled out in an ambulance. :eek::p

So I have to say, as much as I love taking Bogey with me I am always very careful where I take him. You can't even say they could set a weight limit or size limit because then it would turn into discrimination again dog size or breed. :rolleyes:

Dogs do mark in public and that is probably the reason that they are no longer allowed at the craft show that was mentioned. I would not be happy if someone was not paying attention to their pet and it lifted its leg on my antique or craft. Just think about how much a lab would pee if it decided it wanted to mark on the antique dresser. Then there are the irresponsible people who do not clean up after their pets. Doberman poop is about the size of a yorkie:p But I am sure that is exactly why they no longer allow pets. There are just too many people that think they do not need to be courteous of others and ruin it for everyone who is very responsible.

I don't want everyone to think I am being mean or trying to disagree about bringing our yorkies into the store because believe me I would love to take mine lil Bogey into even more stores. But I just know what would happen with so many irresponsible pet owners in this world. Where would they draw the line? Would a cocker spanial that weighs 20 lb be acceptable to bring into the store if he owner stuffed it into a carrier? You know what would happen, someone would show up with their 40 lb dog and swear up and down it should be allowed in since Scruffy only weight 20 lb. :rolleyes:
:thumbup:Nice post!! These are my thoughts too. If you open the door for a Yorkie, then soon, all dogs will be allowed. I work in a grocery store. I have seen alot of pets come and go through the store over the years. Personally, I dont mind if the dog is well behaved and I love to see service dogs. But I think it is also a health dept issue and, unfortunately, some people just dont like dogs. Also, what happens if a dog is in a store, but isnt allowed to be, bites someone? There would be the biggest law-suit against the store.

Very good post and so true. It is the irresponsible owners who ruin it for everyone else and it is understandable. I have seen a few people at the pet stores with their dogs running wild, just imagen if it was at a regular store...

It is true with just about everything now days. If you go into Petsmart it state your pet must be leashed and supervised. Many years ago when my son (now 20) was about 8 or so we were in Petsmart. There was a man with a Doberman that Drew walked up to and looked into his eyes. The dog LUNGED at him! I grabbed him and pulled him backward and out of the dogs reach. This was a 2 way problem IMO since the owner should have known better and my son should never have done something like that but he was use to my sister's dobie and that was how they played. Another time at the same store, there was a "pet owner" that had his pit with him. He was walking around the store and encouraging agressive behavior by his dog! What a fool! I'll never forget it since there was a puppy obedience class going on and the guy was letting his dog lunge and barkand growl at everyone. We left because I was so upset and fearful that this dog would attack at any minute.

I love service dogs! They are just amazing the way they are so focused on their job! They are a very elite group that make it into service. :)

It isn't even not liking dogs but they have a FEAR of dog, whether they are big or small so people are deathly afraid of dog.

We shop in as many pet friendly stores as possible. They get more of our business. We always carry Punkin or put her in a sling carrier (which she loves) for her own safety more than anything. We are lucky to live in a mostly dog loving city.

We don't bring her in stores that sell food and we understand. Although I have seen a couple of people in our grocery store lately with dogs in the cart (laying on a blanket). Not sure how they got away with that.

We often get takeout and sit in the car and eat so that we don't have to leave her home alone.

The cat wasn't touching anyone either. She was locked in one of the bedrooms, but, as soon as my uncle walked in the door, he knew as soon as he walked in the cat was in there

I know I am being very hypercritical about the situation..It know isn't fair to be O.K. with the small dog and not O.K. with the bigger ones , but I feel it's easier to accept a small one easier based on fear ( irrational or not) of being bite or jumped on by a larger dog vs a smaller one being carried. Like I said ...I know that is hypercritical :confused:
You need to come visit, I have a german shepherd. She would help you get over your fears of big dogs. I was attacked by a shepherd when I was young, but, was always in love with the breed. Shepherds teeth can scare anyone, but, mine has never bitten anyone, nor would she(unless they were hurting hubby or me, and I still don't know if she would bite then). My nephew is a deputy, he has seen what shepherds can do, so when he came to visit, you could see him going to pet her very cautiously. I opened the gate and let her out, and off she went. She hardly even paid him any attention. Of course, i would never own a mean dog..:) A lot of big dogs are like gently giants!

I personally am not crazy about dogs in stores other than pet-based stores like Petsmart. Petsmart has pet cleanup stations to sanitize any area where a pet might have an accident. Other stores don't, and I don't trust some dog owners to clean up after their pets the way they should.

I don't want to be shopping around in a place which is covered with trace amounts of urine and feces. *shrug*

That being said, I enjoy taking Ollie to Petsmart where he can be around other dogs and a variety of people in a controlled environment. But every time I bring him in, no matter how recently he has been taken out, it seems like he always poops as soon as we get in the door. It's a nervous reaction or something. Very embarrassing...

As long as the establishement allows dogs, I see no problem with it. And I think that every establishement reserves the right to determine that as they see fit, without being criticized for their decision.

I do see the concern to an extent over how it could affect those with allergies, I suppose. I know how highly allergic my husband is to cats and if they were allowed EVERYWHERE than that would put him in a rather bad predicament. Given the infrequency of dogs in public places (at least as far as where I live is concerned) I can't imagine judging based of what I've experiences that it would be that much of a concern, but if dogs were widely excepted and became more of a presence in stores, I can see where it could become an issue.

It is the dander from the cat (or dog) that people are allergic to that causes problems. Two of my children and I are all very allergic to cats. This is also the reason that some people are more allergic to specific breeds of dogs, they produce different dander.

I already knew all of that, I said what I did because someone made it sound like he actually had contact with the cat, when he didn't.
I do remember a lady on here awhile back that was so upset, as she bought a yorkie, thinking her son wouldn't be allergic to it, and he was, so she had to rehome the yorkie, I just remember her being so upset over the whole thing as she loved that little dog(and it was a pretty little thing too):(

Im all for bringing your dog with you, if its the right store! HOwever, I would tell you that if your puppy is not fully vaccinated bring it with you, if your going to lets say a pet store, if you do, make sure you hold the puppy, rather than putting it on the floor or in a cart! Thats all i gotta say about that!!!! :D

Living in New york You are pretty much allowed to bring your dog anywhere Most food places don't even say anything as long as the dog is in a stroller or bag.
I bring my Chihuahua Everywhere in his stroller expect places like shoprite.
Clothes places kmart etc places like that.
Funny thing is i have never brought my dogs to petsmart. I always keep them home, There are to many dogs in & out of there Who knows what that have so my boys stay Home.
Esp. since my Petsmart has a vet inside So sick dogs are there too.

I dont see anything wrong with bringing your dog shopping as long as the store allows it But again living in new york There are dogs everywhere. I run into several while i'm out in bags.

Yeah but hadn't the cat been walking around the house before that? I am badly allergic to cats and everyone on my dads side of the family has at least two and even when they lock them in a room I still have a really bad allergic reaction.
