car riding?
 

any advice on car riding tips? jackson is still young, 9 weeks, and has only rode in the car probably a total of 4 times (going to the vet with the breeder, me picking him up and bringing him home, and now two other times) but he hates it! he whines & shakes so bad and makes me feel awful for him! is there anything specific to make him enjoy car rides more? or is it just him being young and not used to it? do you think he'll outgrow it? when i first brought him home, the breeder warned me he got car sick on the way to the vet and when i was first bringing him home, he did throw up a little. but the other 2 times he's driven with me, he's been in his crate and has been fine sick-wise but he just shakes and whines!

You can try a little gingersnaps to help with the upset tummy if that continues to be a problem.

We have car seats for the kids so that they are secure and safe but can see out the windows. Perhaps if he could see the sites he might not whine so much. And be sure to take him on car rides that "end" with something fun to do. If every time he gets in the car something traumatic happens then he will be afraid of car rides.

Boo, loves to go places, but isn't crazy about the whole 'getting there' part. So he does a little whine nearly the whole time.

Gracie Ruth, loves it all. The ride, the going places, the seeing of the sites. Has from day one.

Yogi, he's still unsure about it all. He does get car sick, so we've been working on doing short, 3-4 blocks, trips to the park for walks, to the pet store to see things, to play dates, etc... He's doing better, not sick every time now, so I have hope he'll out grow it. Now if I can just teach my DH to drive like a normal person and not a race car driver on a road course. zig-zag-zip-zoom. :D We've also discovered that Yogi may be a front seat only passenger, just like some people have to sit in the front in order to not get car sick. The times he hasn't been sick, he's been in the front seat of the car and not in the back.

bailee is twelve weeks and at first she was unsure but she likes it now, i have a carseat for her I got at petsmart and she likes riding in that best because she can look out the window...I have just been taking her for rides alot to get her used to it(mainly because i drive an hour and half home every weekend) the more you ride, the more they will become ok with it

it seemed that when jackson looked out the window is when he actually got sick, lol, so i've been trying to avoid letting him look out the window, but i guess i could try one more time!

I think is normal that some dogs shake a little in the beginning, but it will go away, a car seat for your fur baby will be nice and secure also don't feed him to close to the time to be riding, also some nice low soft music will be nice:p for long rides my girls love some soft instrumental music:rolleyes:

General Lee got car sick when he was in his crate. We got a car seat from PetSmart that can be adjusted up and down by an air bag in the bottom. He has not gotten sick yet and we took a 6 hour drive for a camping trip. Is Jackson in a car seat when looking out the window or in someones arms or in a crate? In the car seat he can lay down and go to sleep. The fussiness comes and goes. General Lee did not get fussy at first, but now when we stop he wants out. He is learning that he can not get out ever time we stop and someone gets out. I did have a fur baby that was so bad that when you slowed down on the freeway or in town for a stop light or traffic, she would start to whine and get very upset.

when he got carsick, i was holding him in my lap. but the other times he was in a crate and did not get carsick, just whined and cried! thanks for the tips. i've been considering getting one of those pet car seats.

The time that General Lee got sick I was holding him also. He had been in the crate and was whining and I took him out and held him.

I highly recommend the car seat also. When properly restrained they are so very safe. A couple of weeks after we got the car seat, we got hit on the side of the car seat and ended up in the meridian of the freeway. The truck was damaged enough to be towed away. He was perfectly fine. Had he been loose, or even in the crate I think he would have been hurt.

Suri would get car sick but I started using her carrier as a car seat. It is a Pets Fly carrier that opens in the front. So I buckle it in and open it up and make sure she has a harness attached to the carrier, she has done fine ever since. :)
