tips for out of control cottony coat needed! 1 Attachment(s) Roscoe (our sweet rescue baby) was found roaming as a stray. Once we got him his first professional grooming, I realized I was going to have to put in major work to keep his coat looking nice! Even after a thorough bath and brushing his coat is extremely difficult to manage. It is very coarse all over and extremely wavy on his back end-so wavy that I am wondering if he could possibly be mixed with a different breed. (not that I care either way b/c i am absolutely in LOVE with that dog) Coarse, wavy hair, I know, is not typical for the yorkie breed, right? Anyway, I am wondering if anyone else's babies have a similar coat and if so, what grooming products do you use to keep it soft, manageable, and under control? I have posted a pic but it is probably hard to tell without seeing/feeling him in person. NOTE: this picture is from the rescue organization 3 months ago which is why he was so boney! He has fattened right up! Didn't want anyone to think I was starving my little guy!:) |
one of my babies has a very soft, cotton coat...her hair is very wavy too when it is wet and has a slight wave when it is dry...i know she is 100% yorkie and i think the waves come from her coat type...it is definitely not the preferred coat type for a yorkie but it does not make them any less yorkie KWIM? ;) my solution?? a puppy cut! she looks beautiful with long hair and it killed me to cut it, but it is so much easier to maintain and take care of ... we rotate shampoos (i have not found THE ONE for her hair yet lol) ... minksheen is pretty good and i also like the paul mitchell pet products on her hair....i also got some samples from bio-groom and that seemed to work the best on her so i will use the sample one more time this weekend and pick it up at the store :) congrats on rescuing your baby....you are a true angel  |
When I had my dog in a long coat. I used Aussie 3 minute miracle and left it on for 5 minutes...once a week. I worked great!! |
1 Attachment(s) I've heard that cowboy magic detangler is good for cotton coats if they are matting, but I think one of the cuttest cuts I've seen is the body hair really short with the legs and facial hair long. Here's a picture. |
he is a beautiful.it was wonderful you rescued him. as for his coat it doesn't look cottony or wirey to me. I have seen a wirey coat and it doesn't look like your boy. I have never seen a full cotton coat in person but I would say the second pic looks like what I envision. as for what you can do I would say when you wash and condition him I would use oil in the final rinse and rinse really good then blow dry and you should be able to manage it much better. as for the oil type I usually use what they have in the african american section and only a drop or 2. |
thanks everyone! i am going to have to go stock up on all these products and see what works best! we really lucked out with him...besides the unruly coat-haha-he has the perfect personality and disposition. And then we have Remy--who we love but is QUITE the opposite...perfect little silky coat and not-so-perfect disposition. He is a handful to say the least! HAHA:rolleyes: BUT...afterall, they are our babies:animal36 |
