I want another furbaby - but I have some questions ...

We are considering getting a little baby brother or sister for Lucy (a YT, of course) - but I need some advice:

Lucy is 6 months old, and (obviously?) female. If we were to get another pup, should it be male to avoid clashes of any sort?

Also, someone's told me that you should wait until your first pup is an adult before getting another, to avoid the original pup reverting to puppy behaviours ... but I really don't want to wait that long. I know there's a mine of useful information amongst YTers - can you share your thoughts with me, please, before I go ahead and make the final decision?

I had Ivy (she was about 5 years old) for about 2 months then I got Max (he was 6 months old) and they love each other. I don't know about getting 2 girls but I think 2 boys might be a problem. I have 1 of each and I have no problems. Good luck:animal36:animal36

Boo was 5 years old when we got Gracie Ruth. And although they play well together, G really did get on Boo's nerves sometimes with all the puppy antics. :p

Yogi came along when G was 9 months old. This has been great for everyone. Boo can play when he wants and G won't continue to pester him when he's ready to stop. Yogi and G play constantly. Their energy levels are the same, their close in size and they like doing the same things. The only problem is that Yogi really likes to pull Gracie's hair. He'll pull and pull until she starts crying. I'm amazed that she doesn't attack him when he hurts her. But we been very watchful and break it up most times before it gets to the crying stage. Yogi is 4 months old now and the hair pulling doesn't have quiet the fascination it use to. Now it's all about the chase. :D

I would recommend a boy for two reasons. First, there is rarely a problem with the boy/girl combo. I know a lot depends on the personalities of the Yorkies, but for the most part I think you'll have a better chance of them getting along if they both aren't female. Second, I find that "generally" boys are more cuddly then girls. Many girls are very cuddly, Annie was my velcro dog. Sadie and Gracie love to be loved on, but were/are more independent then either Boo or Yogi. I love my Gracie, she's my special angel, but I love my Momma Boys too!! They are the bestest for kisses, hugs and cuddles.

Thanks for your responses ... all I have to do now is contact my breeder and find out when the next lot are due. It's my birthday in February, so it would be really nice if I could get a new baby for then. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork

in my honest opinion, girls and males just get along better. i've never had two yorkies but i've had two dogs of different breeds together before and the males and females ALWAYS get along better than the females together, or even males togther.

my yorkie puppy, Jackson, absolutely loves the female jack russell/shih tzu mix over at my dads house. they play SO great and love each other! and over at my mom's house, he gets along great with my female cockapoo.

personally, i would recommend gettng a male with your female.

That's definitely the majority view amongst friends ... so I've now set my heart on a little baby boy ... can't wait! :thumbs up

I just added a boy to my home and Chelsea loves him! I was so worried as well but it's worked out fine. He gets on her nerves but for the most part they get along great. I love to watch them play. :D

I think they tend to get along better when they're pups together, and as far as another female, if you have them spayed, I don't think you would have any problems adding another girl

When Zoey was about 10 months old I added Toby. I think it was good timing. They are growing together and enjoy each other's company. Personally I decided to get a male to curb any possible alpha problems that might come up later down the line. Although you will spay/neuter your babies you can still sometimes get a more dominant dog. There are folks on here that have multiple females or males in their home and things are ok but I wouldn't want to take that chance and be the one that is not so lucky. It would be heart wrenching to have two fighting all the time to the point you need to rehome one.

I enjoy having one of each sex. They have such different personalities.
