hard stools OK, I had hoped things would correct themselves but since Thanksgiving, my little girl has been either constipated or had hard stools. We went out of town, 9-hr. trip and she didn't pee or poop the entire trip. She had a BM every other day for a few days and after arriving back home, she has been irregular--twice, she came running and crying in pain with stool stuck to her rear end. She doesn't eat dog food well and has eaten mostly chicken and a little beef since we have had her. I have tried to add some roughage by giving her apple and carrots. She did have one looser BM yesterday but every day or two, I find pieces of hard stool stuck to her hair on her bottom. I immediately wash her bottom because I cannot stand stinky animals. She even acts appreciative of my care of her. I don't know what else to do. She is around six months old and weighs about 3 lbs. She is a doll and I don't know what else to do. Help! |
Well, an all-protein diet definitely constipates people, so it's not a surprise to hear it's constipating a dog. Does she really only eat chicken and beef? I would be concerned that that's not enough nutrients. I'd suggest: 1) Work to get her on dog food. Keep trying new brands until you find one she'll eat. Alternatively, you can pick a good brand and wait her out for a day or two until she's hungry enough to eat it. 2) There are a number of ways to make dog food more enticing. A number of people here have their dog on a raw diet. 3) Try more grains and vegetables. You can give her Cheerios as a snack. Yorkies like green beans and pumpkin is supposed to be good for their stomach. |

You need to add some veggies to her diet. If all you at was beef and chicken you would be hopping around in pain too. You can either buy baby food veggies or they sell cans of veggies like sweet potato and pumpkin. Just mix it into her food and she will eat it. I feed my three a combination of NB Sweet Potato and Venison kibble, then I mix in canned pumpkin and Evengers 100% venison with a little warm water. I mix it all together and make a gravy out of the pumpkin and Evengers. They love it! Doodlebug always had an upset tummy and the pumpkin really helped with that too. A 100% protein diet is not good for yorkies. My three love Cheerios too! |

I purchase the NB @ Petco. Evenger's I get from the doggy boutique in town and it really is not that expensive about $1.25 can and then I mix the entire can with pumpkin. Natural Balance comes in many different flavors but I use the Limited Ingrediate because Pebbles has allergies to chicken and grains. Also, check in the health and diet forum here and there are links to many different foods and they all offer free samples. :) |

Here is the link to the Sticky. Hope this is helpful. :) |
Thanks for all the help! I'll check it out... |
Oh, I forgot one of the best ways to get things moving: beans! They have tons of fiber. You probably have a can of beans in your cupboard right now. I'd give her maybe five to start with and see how that works. |
