5 month old yorkie wearing owner out Has anyone else got the feeling their yorkie has endless energy? Buddy :aimeeyork gets a 1/2 hr walk in the morning, 10 mins at dinner and 1/2 hour walk at night, he has 1/2 hr training session at home, learning to sit and stay etc, I am then constantly throwing toys to fetch, playing tug of war with toys etc, I try to do something for myself and he barks constantly for me to play with him again:p. Who ever tells me that a yorkie is a lap dog  can borrow Buddy for a weekend! still love him to bits and would not swap him for the world but boy he has got some energy |
LOL welcome to the world of "Yorkie". Buddy will be 5 soon and he still wears me out. Not as much but demands attention on a daily basis and will fetch as long as I have the energy to throw the ball. |
I am right there with you!! 4 months old and he is wearing me out.. i take him for 3 loooooong walks a day and he still comes back to the apt running and jumping... Im hoping when i get him in Puppydaycare it will wear him out too..lol.. But the other day he was quiet and laying down and it scared me.. lol so i threw somthing and he went running.. and i started him up again..lol.. silly me:p YOU ARE NOT ALONE :animal36 |
:) He He I am sorry to break this to you but I have a 1 1/2 and 7 month old and the 1 year old is very hyper still!! I take them to the tennis court so they can run around and play together for an HOUR , then I take them for 2- 30 min walks and they still come home and play and run around! :) So I am use to it now, I guess you get use to it :) I hear the males are more active as well :) But its ok I still love them to death and they get whatever they want even if mom is on her death bed!! :) Good luck!!:aimeeyork |
The trick is to get two yorkies - they tire each other out! At least mine do. They are ready and willing to go to bed at 8 O'clock every night. |
My Yorkie girl is 3 months old. She wants to run and play all the time. I see that according to all of you that is normal. She does not want to sit in my lap or to cuddle hardly at all. Is that normal? Will that change? |
:D little bundles of energy aren't they ? Chloe is 8 months and 2.5 lbs. I thought "Oh , she will be a sweet lil' cuddler." NOT...She is wanting to play ALOT !!!! She wears us out then naps , then starts again ! When we first got her ( at 4 months ) I thought she would make it a block or so when we went for a walk, she was sooo tiny. But she held pace with my full of energy 3 yr. old terrier mix, and ran after her most of the way looking as happy as could be. I was worn out before she was . I kept picking her up thinking she needed a rest , and she would look at me like "Mama , NO" Looking back I realize now what I was in for! I have two "Wild and Crazy dogs " :D:D |
Whew, that scares me. I am use to large laid back dogs. I can't get anything done for watching this girl or else I have to crate her. I don't like to keep her crated a lot. Tonight she wouldn't sit still while we were trying to watch a movie. I hated to put her in the crate, but it was the only way to watch the movie. I was hoping when she got a little older that she would do better. |
I would get an ex pen and get her used to it. I wish I would of done that with Mia. She is demanding because of me. I never said no when she was younger. Now I am learning from all of my mistakes. They are smart dogs. Train them to fit into your life, you do not have to entertain them. Get some toys and a safe place for them to entertain themselves. Say no. |

Hang on...there is hope! LOL My 1 1/2 yr old yorkie FINALLY settled down and can NOW be considered an official *lap dog.* Whew! I thought she'd never run out of energy! I learned quick how easily yorkies can become bored so she has a basket full of different toys thank God for PetEdge.com Wholesale prices on exclusive dog grooming and pet supplies (wholesale pet products and toys). Every day ALL day she would empty the entire basket and bring me the toys (or anyone who visited). The only rest I had was when she'd chase the cats. Two mths ago I noticed a complete change in her. She still likes to play but she naps more than she plays now (whoo-hoo!). Her sleeping/napping habits also changed. She now prefers napping on my lap when I'm sitting where as before she'd nap next to me. BTW - I actually took my dog to the vet for a physical to be sure she was alright (she is fine). |
Mine only started calming down a little bit when he reached 2 years old...and at 2.5 yrs old now, he is willing to cuddle a little when we watch movie at night. |
The need will slow down some as he gets a bit older. Right now he has the puppy zoomies. They sure are sweet though. |
See my recent "one year old" post. I know the feeling. |
Wow Snickers must be a different kind of Yorkie. He is so calm, rarely barks, and ALWAYS insists on me picking him up to cuddle on my lap. He is only 5.5 months! Many people have told me he is the calmest Yorkie they have ever seen, and I am grateful. He does love to run up and down our hallway and take his toys from room to room, he is very good at entertaining himself. If you tell him no once in a while, he will learn to entertain himself. I just love him to bits...sometimes I think there is a human in that little body and he's going to open his mouth one day and start talking to me. Hahaha his cleverness shocks me!! "Best investment we ever made" quoted by my husband...so true!! |
