Puppy size
 

My pup, at 8wks weighed in at 3.6 lbs.

The Mum is a 4lb yorkie poo and the Dad is a 4lb yorkie poo as well.
I was told that she wasn't going to be much bigger than that.

Is this possible though, that at 8wks she might already be really close to her full grown size? or is that impossible?

I THINK I read that if you double their weight at 8 wks, that should be about their adult weight.

Is there a typo or am I misreading? 3.6 lbs (57.6 oz) is one heavy 8 week old Yorkie pup.

I think she will get much bigger than her parents! Maybe around 8 to 10 pounds full grown is my estimation.

Normally you double their weight at 12 weeks for their full grown weight. Are you sure your puppy is 8 weeks old? I bet she's cute :)

You double their weight at 12 weeks, triple it at 8 weeks. Sounds like she's going to be a pretty good sized baby. probably around 10 lbs would be my guess

It's actually double the weight at twelve weeks.

No way is your puppy even close to her full grown weight at only eight weeks old. If you look here, you'll see she is off the growth chart:

Did you actually see her parents? Even if they are small, since she is a mixed breed, she may have inherited her larger size from her Poodle genes. Genetics are tricky even in purebred dogs.

I bet she'll be at least ten pounds. Ten pounds is still a small dog, though.

could have even inherited the genes from a larger yorkie. Look at my yorkie, her parents were 4 lbs and mine ended up at almost 14 lbs

She was on junk dog food at the beginning, Ol'roy...
I know this is junk and I'm switching her to Blue Buffalo but could this dog food have caused her to be a bit heavier as a pup?

I don't think the food she had earlier have something to do with her actual weight .

No, genetics will determine what size she will be. She is just destined to grow larger than you expected.

Breeders who breed mixes aren't using good representations of the standard to begin with, so she could have some large Yorkies in her background. We have some Yorkies here who weigh in the teens! Poodles can be larger, too.

Did you see the parents? Were they really both that small? Did the mom need a C-section to deliver such large puppies?

I am glad you are switching her food. Ol' Roy is junk and has been the subject of some recalls, too. :mad:

My puppy at 8 weeks weighed 3 lb 1 oz so I know what you mean. I'm wondering how huge she's going to get too! I was told they all grow at different rates so it didn't mean a lot that she weighs that now. Her parents were both between 6 and 7 lbs but I think she'll probably be more like around 8 to 10 lbs. I really don't care cause I didn't want too tiny of one anyway. Whatever she ends up weighing will be fine with me.

Every pup is different, some grow early on, some grow later on. but I think you should expect at least 8lbs.

I've had 4 small dogs in my life. all of them are quite different in weight and growth.

Shorty who we got when she was 8 weeks weighed two and a half pounds, and grew to be 5lbs now(almost 4 years old)

Rainer who we got at 12 weeks was bearly 1lb (underweight at the time though), now a bit over 3lbs.

Dolly who we got at 8 monthes weighted 2.8lbs, still weigh the same now almost 3 years.

Chipper who we got at 8 weeks was 2lbs, now 6lb-big-boy lol

Yes I saw the mum, and she was very tiny- probably closer to 3.5lbs even
and I saw pictures of the dad who looked a good 4lbs himself.

Mixing breeds is very unpredictable. Although Yorkies are supposed be be under seven pounds, Poodles come in all sizes. She obviously has some larger dogs in her background. How many were in her litter? Did her mom need a C-section?

Her name is Myla.
Mum had two pups, the one photo is of her and her brother at around 6 weeks. Her brother is smaller than her- I think by a pound or so, but clearly takes of the dad as they both have more visible "poodle" in them.

I do not believe that the mom needed a C-section but am not certain.

I can now see how very unpredictable it really is!

I'm not too experienced with designer (cross?) breeding... but, I always thought you weren't supposed to breed two designer breeds together? :confused:

Because, I always thought that when you did so- the genetics would be different than breeding a poodle with a yorkie. When it comes to poodle x yorkie, guessing the weight, size, hair, etc of the puppies is easier... as both dogs in the breeding are purebred and their genetics are more definite. But breeding yorkie poo x yorkie poo is breeding two mutts together. Meaning that it would be very hard to guess the genetics of the resulting puppies. Meaning that- their size could be bigger (or smaller) than the parents. Which, might explain why your puppy might be bigger, if that is the case.

As I said, though, I'm not experienced with cross breeding; that's just something I read off of a breeders website who bred cockapoos. She admitted to never breeding two cockapoos together and elaborated on why. Genetics.

Well, you double at 3 months and triple at 2 months. So, being about 3 lbs now... your dog will probably be about 9 or 10 lbs. Of course, some dogs are a lb more or less. But, you get a close estimate from doubling and tripling.

Roxanne, Myla is so cute..i wouldnt worry about her weight, as long as she is healthy. My Molly is about 15lbs, and i feel she is still very small, especially when a german shepherd dog comes bounding across the fields towards her!!:eek:
