Traveling with puppy We have to travel on a train with our puppy. It's going to total a four hour trip. I am assuming he will have to potty during this time. We have a little kennel, a stuffed toy (btw, do we have to worry about him chewing on it? i got one with no eyes or nose, it's just a stuffed pillow in the shape of a bone... i had read they like things to cuddle with), and a sherpa pad for the kennel. Now, I was thinking of taking a shoe box and lining it with wee pads, so that we can take him out of the kennel while on the train, and just put the box on my lap and have him pee in the box. If anyone has a better suggestion I'd love to hear it! But here is my concern. When we open the kennel door, will he come running out and take off on us in the train? I am having horrible visions of that but am not sure how reasonable that is. Should we put his harness on him before we put him in his kennel, so we can leash him when we open the door? I don't know if I'm making sense, but I guess I'm just trying to figure out a safe way for him to potty. Also, do people normally keep the puppy's water and food bowl in the kennel with him? |

If you keep him in his kennel for the length of the trip chances are he won't pee in his crate. Dogs are programmed that way. How old is he, btw? I believe they learn how to "hold" their bladder at about 5 months. Personally, I would just leave him alone in his crate during the train ride. He'll probably just sleep during it :p Once you get off the train just keep him in his kennel until you find a safe and secure area where you can bring him out, unleash him, and let him go potty and drink more water. He shouldn't really need to eat anything, provided that you feed him in the morning before you go and later that evening. You could give him some treats that he'd probably love though :D Don't worry, everything will work out and you'll do great :) Have fun! |
If you take him out on the train and are not holding him I would definitely have a leash on him because he may run off I know mine would so she could say hi to everyone :D but I really have no idea about the other stuff sorry. |
I've traveled with Duke on NJtransit many times but not more than 3 hours max. Most of the time, I would just leave him in his bag and he sleeps during the duration of the train ride. I would leave a chew toy (nylabone) in the bag with him in case he gets up and is bored. I also usually leave the harness on him so that if I ever have to take him out of the bag, I'll just put the leash on. I'm not familiar with a kennel but I also put a blanket over the bag so that he doesn't get distracted or bothered by others around b/c the last thing I would need is others exciting him making him bark on the train. I don't usually feed him water or food, maybe a treat or 2. I think it depends on your pup and the age, Duke has been doing well (knock on wood) since he was a few months old on 2 hour train ride in his bag. Good luck and keep us posted. |
Thank you! He's a baby. This is our trip home from picking him up from the breeder. I wasn't sure if they usually run out of their kennel/bag once you open it... and how quickly I'd need to leash him. By kennel I mean those plastic carrier crates. |
He's about 10 weeks, and so bladder will definitely need to be relieved about every hour. We are looking at a 4 hour trip. I have fears of opening the door to his carrier and him running away and.... well, I'm worried about that. We have a harness for him, but what if he runs off on us before we are able to leash him? I know I'm probably wrong in thinking he'll take off as soon as we open the kennel door, but I am wondering if anyone knows any "tricks' for pottying in public that are safe. We are bringing a cardboard box that we'll put wee pads in and that's where he'll potty on the train.... but he could get out of the box pretty easily too. |
Tulsa (now 1 1/2 yrs old) was 8 weeks at our first flight home. He came from Tulsa, hence the name. He has since flown about 20 times. When he was really young I would take him to go potty before going into the airport. He was in a sherpa bag with a wee pad in the bottom. He would sleep the whole flight. When we landed we would go to the bathroom and i would take him out ON THE LEASH and put a wee pad on the bathroom floor. He only peed in the bag once. I would give him time to go potty on the wee pad then we would head home. Make sure to keep him on a leash when hes not in the kennel. I would suggest that you not take him out during the train ride unless he gets really anxious, because that would mean that he has to go potty. The only problem that came up with our travels was that he was trained on the wee pads (which are white) when we were in hotels etc. Well, my bathroom rugs are white. you can guess what the problem was. Thankfully, he got over it pretty quickly. Good luck and dont be nervous. It is good to travel with him in the kennel, he will be comfortable and safe and those are both good things! |
