New, weird habit All of a sudden Scooter buries everything in the backyard. I mean he digs in the flower gardens and buries everything from rawhide bones to his favorite toys. Today I saw him bury his new (this afternoon new) plush duck. The darn thing is almost as big as he is and he buried it up to it's neck. He's never done this before and I don't remember anyone mentioning it here on the discussion board. If anyone has had their Yorkie do this please let me know. I haven't a clue how to stop him. :eek: |
Sorry but I can't help laughing out loud at the visual image of this little yorkie working furiously at burying his new duckie!!!! :laugh: I don't have advice as I haven't had this issue...hopefully someone else will answer. |
My baby girl is 16wks and she mock digs and I bought her a bone with treat on one side and she tries to bury or hide it every chance she gets. She also tries to bury her food when she is done. I saw an episode of "Its me or the dog" today and she worked with a terrier that liked to dig. Her remedy was to buy a sand box and bury their toys in it to promote them to just dig in the sand box an dwhen they dig in the sandbox give them a lot of praise and a treat. |

I would definitely do the sandbox thing. It gives him a place he can dig and not get in trouble for it. They are terriers and terriers do like to dig. My teapot likes to bury things in the house. I'll give him a treat and he'll bury it under some clothes, or a pillow, or blanket. It's funny to watch. |
We had to stop giving Sophie chew bones because she became so obsessive about "burying" them in the house that she would spend the entire evening going from one place to the next trying to find a place to bury them. She wondered from one place to the next, drop it, and then go back, pick it up and search for another place. She seemed to be totally obsessed. She would never actually chew them. |
Yorkies were bred to search for mice in textile mills in england so the digging probly goes back to their roots. He may hiding it so he can find it later. I know with Sasha I find her stuff in some of the wierdest places. She tends to hide them under my blanket when shes done. But she always knows where to look when she wants it. I dont let her take her toys outside. When we are outside she does dig. She can dig a pretty good grave. Alway past my ankle. Maybe not letting him take his toys outside will help or getting him outside toys rather than brand new duckies lol. I believe that its the hunter in them. We can take them from the hunting but cant take the hunting from them. |

Teddy's half brother will dig in the couch until his mom throws a blanket over whatever it is he's digging.. It's pretty funny. Teddy just mock digs to get comfortable or to get under a comforter (I think it's because it's cold out and warm under the comforter) anyway funny story :) |
Funny picture in my mind of a duck buried up to his neck!.. Mac will "bury" stuff also..everything, all over the house, including anything that Maci is eating or playing with! I looked it up out of curisoty the other day....this is what they said: This process is called caching or hoarding, and it is common among dogs, wolves and foxes. In fact, other animals practice a form of caching; squirrels gather enough nuts to last through the winter .... Our domesticated dogs may have their food handed to them each day in sufficient quantities, but they still carry this caching trait and bury their bones or toys in the back yard – or even under your pillows – to guard against a possible shortage of food. So, why do dogs bury bones in the ground? Because it's in their nature. |
I know that dog's natural instinct is to bury stuff but I guess I find it hard to remember my sweet Scooter is really a dog. Wow the Dog Whisperer would have a field day with that thought, but you know what I mean. He's my baby.:littleang |
For a sandbox, so you don't have to spend an arm and a leg on a "real" sandbox, I would buy one of those small plastic wading pools for kids and fill it up with sand. |
