Want a yorkie---but have shihtzu LITTERMATES ....I have been doing all kinds of reading and been contacting breeders to see about adding a yorkie to our home. I have just started reading all of the reasons why you should NOT get littermates. Unfortunately, 1 1/2 ago the breeder that I got my shihtzus from, did not mention any of this to me. I have a brother and sister that get along well. Does anyone have littermates? If so, have you introduced another dog into your home? One breeder that I spoke with said that she would NOT sell a pup to me because she knew of a shihtzu that killed a yorkie. At that point I had not even mentioned that they were littermates. Does anyone know anything about the littermate dynamic? I am to go see some yorkie puppies on Sunday -- but just wonder if I am crazy for even thinking of bringing another one home. |
My shih tzu is almost 11 and she gets along fantastic with all 3 of the other dogs. Infact, the puppy keeps her going. They all know her growls, she has a growl that means she wants to play, and another one that means leave me the heck alone. She has never once snapped at any of the dogs, as I wouldn't allow it. I think your shih tzus would do great with a dog. |
I have no experience sorry, How old are your shihtzu's? I have never thought of littermates being a problem but now that I think about it, it does make sense that they may not accept someone "new" to their pac. Hmm I would definitely say let them meet the new pup, perhaps a few times outside the home to see how they do? I am sure if you take a slow approach to introducting them they should learn to get along, definitely keep them seperate when you leave the house for a while. |

I guess I am just concerned with them being littermates more than just having two dogs. They have only known their life together -- and I just wonder how accepting they would be with another dog. What other dogs do you have and hold old are they? |
Well, I reread, sorry I hadn't really answered your question. Yes, my son has littermates(brother and sister), and they both get along fantastic with all of my dogs Also, my sister has 5 dogs(2 of them littermates), the only ones that occasionally get in to it, are the littermates My other sister has littermates, and no problem out of those with the other dogs either(she has 7 dogs in the house). |
I have littermates (Phantom & Brandi) and they get along fine with each other and the other dogs. One big happy yorkie family! |

1. Shadow - He's the daddy (he's 8 yrs. old) he was in the home first (7 lbs) 2. Gellica - She's the mommy (she's 3 yrs) Got her last year (8 lbs) 3. Phantom - (son) 1 yr old (born Halloween '07) (10 lbs) 4. Brandi - (daughter) 1 yr old (born Halloween '07) (8 lbs) 5. Sapphire - (not related) 1 yr. old - (4 lbs.) we got her 3 days after my litter was born, so she grew up with the littermates, and the parents adopted her too. We've never had any issues with anybody not getting along. |
SEE HUNNY, IT DOES WORK.....LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVE A MULTI-DOG HOUSEHOLD AND IT WORKS OUT GREAT! Sorry girls, I was just practicing for when my husband comes home! LOLOL Thanks so much -- you have really helped me! |
Hi, I have a friend that has two yorkies sisters that are litter mates. They get along splendidly! My yorkies aren't litter mates, but had lived together in the past. It took them about a week and a half for the more dominant to accept that the younger one was part of our family. But after that they were great. However, I also don't really believe in bad dogs so much as I do Lazy owners. . . So if you are firm and structured with you furbabies you will lead the pack and have a lot less aggression issues. |

When we got our shihtzus last year, there was three puppies in total in the litter.....I took two and my aunt took one. For the first two months, I had all three puppies at my home training them (my aunt didn't really want to train a puppy). The third was a male also -- and the two little males would get in some terrible fights. It got to a point that my aunt finally took the little one to her house. Now, every time we go over for a visit, the males don't even look at eachother.....but everyone wants to play with the female. It is sad to see -- because usually my aunt's dog and my female will race around and have fun - and my little Mr. Syd is left out. :(....I guess they both have flashbacks of when they were puppies.... |
My uncle has 2 bichons and they are brothers. They get along great. I visit him often with my yorkie and daschund and all 4 get along great! My mother in law babysits my yorkie sometimes when I go away for a weekend. She has a 20 lb shihtzu! He is very gentle with Triss (5 lbs) and loves to play with her. They sleep together on her bed at night. My advice: -let them get used to each other slowly, like someone said -make sure the older dogs know they are higher in rank (get fed first, get treats first) When I first got Triss my 5 year old daschund didn't want anything to do with her and avoided her completely. I kept them separated when I wasn't around. After about a month, he started becoming closer to her. Now, Triss is 8 months old and her and the daschund are inseperable. They sleep on the same bed (even though theres 2), they eat out of the same bowl at the same time, and if one leaves with one of us, the other waits at the door. They love each other so much. :D I didn't push it and just let their relationship develop naturally. |
The pack leader in this family is ME..and that's the way it has to be. Mine know when I mean business..:) |
I don't think it will matter all that much. My dad has a mutt (shih tzu/toy poodle/collie mix) and two jack russells which are littermates and they get along just fine. Never heard them argue, just playingg. So I'd say they'll get along just fine. Just be sure to introduce the yorkie to them very slowly and watch that they don't snap at him/her. |

I have a 6yr yorkie, a 10yr lab and a 2 yr old toy poodle. We adopted a 9 month old shih tzu two weeks ago and they all get along wonderfully. My shih tzu and yorkie are already the best of friends:) |
:) I can't offer any advice about littermats, however, I can about shihzu's (sp). My son and daughter in law have a litte shihzu, Jack. He and LuLu are the best of friends. The only thing I have to watch is they were introduced when they were younger and now he has put on more weight than her....so I have to watch to make sure he doesn't overpower her. They absolutely love each other. |
