Doggie sleeping in the bed... Thor is now 5 months old and I have been crate training him. With in the last few weeks he has been waking up at 3am and barking. So now I just let him sleep in the bed with me. I know that some people do this, but will this greatly affect his crate training? Or should I not worry about anything? Will he freak out if I have to go out of town where I can't bring him? How does everyone feel about doggies in the bed with them? He has a much better night and so does everyone else sleeping if he's in bed with me. Confused!! |
Ava is 16 weeks and still sleeps in her playpen but she sleeps until 5:30 when I bring to the bed. The others sleep in the bed. I don't crate train any of mine though. I have several xpens I use to confine them when necessary. |
Well...I think it will be much harder to crate train if you spoil your dog and let him sleep on the bed. We were not getting much sleep with Stomper and tried him on the bed for about 2 weeks. He started eating the sheets, so my hubby said "No more!". Stomper hates his crate, unless it is open, so he now sleeps on the carpet in our bedroom. He is happy I think as long as he is near us. Still wakes up at 6 AM every monrning, but he does sleep through the night at 9 months. |
Both of my dogs sleep with us at night. Its much quieter for us. Neither of my dogs do well with confinement. |

IMO If you're crate training him, he should stay in the crate and you will just have to ignore the cries..which is really hard. If you're not going to crate train him anymore, then bed is ok. But I think you will be confusing him and giving him the wrong idea, that if he barks, or cries, he'll get what he wants. |

I guess i don't really know what crate training is but...I let Gracie sleep with me at night but she is in her kennel when I am gone...she was potty trained very quickly and doesn't cry in her kennel...Could someoe explain what the process of crate training is??? |
lexi was crate trained , but after awhile she was getting up too earlier and wanted out of the crate.. she is almost 5 months old now, i'd say about 2 months ago i started letting her sleep in the bed with me so we both could have a better night and it worked... all though she gets up around 5 or 6am, i feel it so much easier for me... she does wake up in the middle of the nite to go potty, but comes right back to bed.... sometimes she wakes up at 2am and wants to stay awake and i want to beat her(only kidding), but i know she still a puppy and will have to wait it out. |
Both of my boys were crate trained, but after I had them for a couple of weeks, I just let them sleep with us. This was before I had my children -- so why change? They always wind up jumping down off of the bed (via "their" stool) and sleep in their doggy beds which are beside my bed, but that's definitely why we bought a "King-sized" bed -- sometimes it's 6 of us in there at one time! They run loose during the day, but sleep most of the time. Since I had my oldest son 4 yrs. ago I've been a stay-at-home mom, but prior to that, when I was working, the never ran amok or tore the house up! |

I would say that if you are going to crate train you need to do it fully and not let them sleep in bed...we never did he crate thing with our girls and they sleep in our bed and are just confined to a small area while we are gone...this has the best way to go for us...but everyone is different, just whatever you pick stick with it!! |
I thought the theory of crate training is that dogs won't potty in their own beds. So, what difference does it make if the bed is large (and includes people) or small and he is enclosed by himself? The only way this won't work the same as a crate is if he potties in the bed OR jumps out and potties on the floor. right? Shelby has been sleeping with us since she was about 14 or so weeks old and she only had a tiny "beginning" of an accident once. She tried waking me up but I was a little slow. (she is now 20 wks.) I think her sleeping with us has helped with the potty training process. She is soooooooo cozy she sleeps through the night and I usually wake up before her. |
Trixie is crate trained and sleeps in a crate next to my bed... Once in a while when she gets up really early and I let her out... I want to go back to bad, but she doesn't want to go back in her crate. She'll sleep with me for an hour or so until it is time to get up. So far, it has not affected her crate training at all. She's still eager to get in her crate at night and doesn't get up any earlier... Now, her sleeping in my bed only happens once in a great while... |
