Suggestions for finding a reputable breeder I am new to the site & looking for a yorkie. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on finding a reputable breeder? Questions you might ask? It would be ideal to see the parents before purchasing, but if I am having the dog shipped, how would I be sure it is not coming from a puppy mill? I would obviously avoid the term "teacup" but is there anything else I should watch out for? Where I'm from it seems there are lots of people who breed small dogs just to make some money. I would like to find a breeder who is breeding for the love of the breed & not just to make a quick buck. I'm looking for a dog that will have a good temperament & health. On a side note, I would like to learn more about the history of the breed. Are there any websites you would suggest? |
Welcome to YT!!:) You will find a ton of great info on this site!! Their are breeders on here you might want to look at, also check the yorkies for sale section!! Good luck in your search:) |
You have come to the right place :) There is lots of helpful information here and lots of folks that will help you get the answers you need. As fas as a breeder, you might want to consider researching the breeders on this site. Many of the are reputable and some ship their pups as well... Hope this helps :D |
It took me awhile and its like a full time job. Take your time and make sure you are completely comfortable with all your answers. Definitely ask to see their guarantee. Definitely see pictures of the Sire and Dam and if you can, see past litters from them. I would also ask about health issues with line that they may know of. Do they do genetic testing? How long they have breeding? Search that breeder online and in this forum. If you cant find something on them in this forum, definitely start a thread on them and ask if anyone here has heard of them. I would also, get the number and name of their VET as well as more than 3 references that have purchased puppies. I like to get references of someone who has had a puppy recently, a few months and over a year. Bite issues are imporant to me, so you can ask about that too. I think that is a good starting point for you! Also, dont be afraid to ask questions! A good breeder will never turn you away. This is a loooonnnggg committment and you should know everything you can about them and their puppies! Good luck! |
Wow, it's wonderful that you are interested in learning about the breed and background before diving in. A dog is a 15-year investment, and too many people make impulse decisions on such a big part of their life. I always recommend the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America for help in finding a good breeder. The YTCA is the parent club of the AKC and it's website has links to many good breeders, as well as information on history of the breed, and even grooming. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America I think this is one of the best threads YT has had on finding a good breeder, read post 6. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ml#post1900263 Here's a link the Humane society puts out on finding a good breeder. http://www.hsus.org/web-files/PDF/Good_breeder.pdf. I think your wise to want to see the mother and father before purchasing the dog. Visiting the home is the only way you can be sure the place is not a puppy mill. People for some reason think because a breeder seems so nice on the phone, they couldn't possibly be running a puppy mill, but nothing could be further from the truth. Even recommendations are sketchy, and so many people have highly recommended a breeder, but later found out they had been deceived. Unless you know, the person doing the recommending, be very cautious, and probably even then. :D I believe the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) is the AKC equivalent, but be wary of the Continental Kennel Club (CKC) which is just an American company that isn't very careful on what it will register. Many of our Canadian friends have purchased puppies thought to be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club who it turned out were registered with the Continental Kennel Club. Good luck in finding your baby, finding a good breeder is hard work, but rewarding someone who's doing a good job breeding will make you feel better in the long run, and you will be adding to the betterment of the breed. do a search on the breeders name, like type it into google and see what comes up. Thats what I did. Also, ask questions about health problems that are common with the breed, like someone else mentioned, I think, the health screening that they do. Maybe find out how many dogs they have that they use for breeding. If they seem like they are more interested in selling you on the dog then they are making sure you are a good home for the dog, they might be questionable. |
I see your a fellow Canadian and from BC too!! Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I just wanted to say that there is a very good breeder in BC who is also a member here. Check out her website Loriben Yorkies & Small Dog Grooming -- if you are willing to travel there are some others in Alberta that I have had personal experience with and would be glad to send you there informaton if you need it. |
