Things to do in the winter I know many of you have strictly indoor dogs, but it's starting to get colder and I'm starting to pulling my hair out with Franklin! Franklin and Maggie normally get a walk every day and a trip to the dog park at least every other day. This keeps them entertained and tired out. Well Maggie is the perfect dog so she's fine but Franklin is very hyperactive and energetic, only now I don't have a way for him to release all of that energy. We got him in the early spring last year so I've never had to deal with this before. What do you do to keep your dogs tired out when they're cooped up inside all day? |
Day Camp We took our little girl to a Doggy Day Camp today. She has been sleeping since she got home at 5!!! We will be taking her there at least once a week in the winter months. It would be nice if she could go more often but it is about 20 dollars a day and money is tight. |
If the temp is just cold, I'll bundle them up and let them run around the deck for awhile. If it's snowing or raining, I try to entertain them indoors with hide and seek, throwing the ball, and maybe learning a new trick. We also take them for car rides more in the winter. They love it and get so excited that they're usually exhausted afterwards. Winter started early here (we're supposed to get a big snowstorm tomorrow), so I'm already planning on outdoor time tomorrow before the snow starts. :aimeeyork |
We play a lot of fetch and hide and go seek. We have a little apartment but we try to kee the pups running around for a good 20 minutes at a time. All it takes is acting excited about something, and they usually behave the same. |
Walk 2x per Day Rain or Shine! I suggest you Invest in a Good "Winter Wardrobe". Me and my 3 Yorkies live in the East Coast. I walk them at least 2x per Day Rain or Shine. During the Summer I get up and walk them very early in the AM. when it is Cooler and during the Winter time I walk them later in the Afternoon when it is warmer. If it is very cold to me I figure it's cold to them? I always put them in a Sweater or a Full body Velour Sweatsuit w/a Quilted Nylon Body Suit I even have "Fleece" Face/Head Hats that a secured w/velcro for extreme cold. I even walk them in the Rain b/c they only go Potty outside! So I have NO choice. I used to live right next door to the Dog Park so they were there at least 3x per day.....they were the only ones running around not shivering! When we're having really bad weather "Hurricane" watch or Thunder Storms I don't bother but otherwise what else do they have to look foreward to besides their "Walks"? |
The problem in Oklahoma is that it's so flat that it's EXTREMELY windy. The dogs are always bundled up when we go out. They don't mind the cold but when the wind blows, they shiver, sit down, and run towards the door. :( Thanks for everyone's suggestions! |
Yeah , I don't like the wind much either ;). Maybe one of those long tunnel type toys that your dogs can run through. Mine saw one and was amazed. That may help wear them out . |
I bring mine out come rain or shine too, once a day but for at least 40 mins if not an hour unless its too cold that day then maybe 30 mins. I have a ton of sweater and a winter coat and booties for him so that he stays warm...I am one of those people who do not like to see my dog shiver because he is cold:rolleyes:. I try to bring him out more often for car rides too or when hubby goes to his barber or places that allow dogs, I bring him along :D |
We have a three level house, so Prince and I get our exercise by running up and down the stairs at least three times every day. (Then I take a nap...lol) |
It's not terribly cold here, but Nikko hasn't had all his vaccinations, so we have to keep him inside as much as possible - so no walks yet. :-( On top of that, he's confined to the kitchen/dining area because he's not reliable enough with his poops and pees to get any carpet time. We encourage him chewing on bully sticks, playing fetch, and we've found a new game too... Before we sit his food dish down for a meal, we'll throw a piece of kibble across the kitchen floor. Nikko races after it, pounces on it, brings it back over to us, then chews it up and eats it while he's staring up at us. We then repeat that process until he gets worn out or bored (usually at least 10-15 pieces of kibble), and finally put his food dish down so he can eat whatever else he wants. It's not much, but at least it's some exercise. A little fetch after that and/or tug of war, and he's usually tired enough to lay down happily in his crate or on one of our laps. Lauren & Nikko |
Diana, I would suggest agility training for Franklin. I would think there should be an indoor facility in the City somewhere. |
