who would you call??????? lacey got under the deck this morning and it took us like a half hour to get her out. i was just getting ready to call 911 but i dont want to get into trouble. so if it happens again should i call 911, the reg police or fire dept? i dont even care if they rip the deck apart thats what we were going to do if we couldnt get her out |

Maybe you should put up a trellis or something so your dog can't get under the deck anymore. This would solve that issue. ;) |
I would try to lure her out with a treat or her favorite squeeky toy. Ripping apart the deck should be the last resort. :p |
I would call the fire department |
:( Glad she came out. I would not call 911 unless she was hurt or would not come out of the deck for a few hours. I would do whatever I could to get her out...get the smelliest yummiest food or treat possible. If that didn't work..I would go see if a neighbor had a pry bar or chainsaw and cut the crap out of the deck. |

I think ripping apart the deck is drastic measures. If the dog is hurt, that's another story. But if she's content under there, I'm sure she's fine. If she's freezing, she would probably come out voluntarily. I wouldn't try so hard, just let her come out on her own. My cockapoo, Carmen, goes under our front porch sometimes and you can't sit there and try to get her out, she'll never come. She's too smart. We just act like we're leaving or walking away and then out she comes... she knows if we leave without her, she'll be freezing under there. |
First thing i would do is Block under the Deck, Second thing i would do is teach my dog To Come. People don't realize how important Stay & come is. I would not Bother the police or fire dept. |
Don't call 911. They will get pissed, and moreover, they probably will not care. What has always helped for me when my dogs wouldn't come is to lay down (face buried in your crossed arms) and pretend to cry. Usually that brings them over, because they either think you're playing or really hurt/sad. |
When we got Callie before we let her run around the back yard not on a leash we spend days Callie proofing the back yard we put a thick chicken wire like stuff around the stairs so she couldnt climb un them around anything she could possible climb under to get under the deck and any spots in the fence that looked like she could get through it was a lot of work but I feel that its Callie proof in the back yard and that besides hawks and other birds of pray that she not going to get in to anything and get hurt. |

I missed that it was "that" cold. Well considering it was 5 degrees..you are right a few hours would have been too much. I am not sure I would have called 911 though...but might have considered calling the police if no other methods I mentioned worked. |

ted and i will have to dig out all the snow and figure out something, the only thing i can think of is to drive steaks into the ground so the rabbits cant dig. |
Get some chicken wire, staple it to the bottom of the trellis, then bury the chicken wire. When those bunnies hit wire while they're digging, they will stop. Good luck! Izzy gets under our deck in the backyard sometimes and won't come out for anything:rolleyes: She can access it by our pool pump and my &$*(#$^# husband has YET to fix it:mad: |
the problem is the ground is frozen now so digging all that up for chicken wire would be really hard. i think if we can , driving steaks into the ground would be easier til summer comes again |
I work for the Fire Department in my town and we get a couple calls a year about scenarios like this... Our most recent one was last week when an elderly woman called the office (not 911) to ask for assistance because her s**tzu had somehow gotten on top of the pool cover and couldn't or wouldn't get off. We all just kinda laugh at these because their technically not what the guys do, but since we have a great Chief and I'm such a animal lover we usually send out a couple guys to help with the situation. FYI - the s**tzu was rescued by one of the guys and was fine. But as a precautionary measure for this happening again I would find a way to block the area off so that she cannot get in there. |
Next time (hopefully there won't be) try walking away saying "bye bye" really calmly and literally make her think you're leaving her there. She'd probably come out real fast then. |
My dog used to do this a lot too... he loved being underneath things, anything, and he really hated when things were blocked off from him. Eventually we put up some trellaces (spelling?) and chicken wire and he stopped, although you could tell he wasn't happy. It would be hard to do in the winter though for sure... Perhaps until the ground softens and some of the snow melts she needs to be put on a line so that she doesn't have access to underneath the deck.. not sure if that's even a possibilty, as it obviously depends on the setup of your yard. Not sure where you live, but living in Canada I know how bad the weather can be and how scary it would be to not be able to get them out.. I would think animal instincts would kick in if they got too cold, but my instincts always screamed rescue my baby! lol |
What about any animal rescue type things? Kinda like the animal cops that are on animal planet. That would be scary! I had a scare kinda like that once, only it was with our rabbit, when I first got her she was teeny tiny, and I guarded off the kitchen area in our apartment for her to play. I went to check on her and she had found some hole that led behind all of the cabinets so she was basically in the wall. I freaked out so bad! I was asking my husband who to call to get her out, but he ended up luring her out with a celery stick. |
If 911 is like it is here, they won't do anything. Cookie had puppies under my deck in May. She would not leave them or bring them out. It was still cold outside. There was no way to get to where she was. I called 911 and they blew me off. So around 11 PM we cut a board out off the deck to get her out and one of the puppies was already dead. |

My dog would come waay before my deck. our deck was rippied apart when my duck got stuck under there. There was a small opening and when he got under there, he was too dumb to get back out. After 45 minutes of him going around quaking in a panic my dad ripped up the deck himself. Im sorry but my dog is worth way more then a deck. I wouldnt chance anymore then a half hour before tearing it up if it were my dog:animal-pa |
BTW- im pretty sure its spelled, shih tzus? ;) haha but im not 100% sure..lol |
I think if you call animal control at your local Co. will give you a certain answer. Glad that your fur-baby is ok:aimeeyork |
