Yorkies will be yorkies. I have no idea if they grow out of it, I sure hope so though! |
Max does the same all the time.. Irritating but I guess he thinks we are playing all the time... Some times he even looks scared of me.. Weird little guy;) |
My yorkie Sophie does this all the time. I think they are just weird! |
Your Outstretched Hands When my guy wants to go in the car or be picked up, he does the same thing. I read somewhere that they perceive your outstretched hands threatening so you wait til they come close enough to pick them up without stretching out your arms. |

This makes sense - I'll have to try it this way. |
I have the same issue with Tina, she has done this since we got her. But I think she is scared of being picked up. She came from a home with a bratty little boy, and is also afraid of being stepped on. It has gotten better over the years, but only moderately. She also hunkers down whenever we get close enough to pick her up. |
My Diddy does the same thing not my girl J'Lo. |
Pasquale does the same to me. Personally i think its a little game he plays. Cause when i say STOP (he uses this for his "stay" command) ...he stops and will let me pick him up....he's a weirdo! I can never figure him out! |
Sissy does that but not Bubba |
Right after I got Bella, I read in a Yorkie book that being so small and being lifted (sometimes without warning) up into the air can be frightening for them. The solution, the author said, was to say "Lift up" or some other short command just before you pick them up.....but you must do it EVERY time BEFORE you pick them up. I started doing that with Bella right away--she liked to be held but from her sort of grabbing on to me, I could tell was a little afraid of being up so high and being hoisted up there too. Now whenever I say "Lift up" or "Let's go" (when I have my coat and shoes on....she knows I'm going somewhere and hopes she gets to go too), she turns around so her rear is towards me and sort of shuffles backward or she puts her paws on my leg to make it easier for me to pick her up!! I don't even have to give the "command" all the time anymore....she reads my body language and knows, but it was good to start off that way, so she had a little warning. And, now when I'm holding her, she thinks she can flop any which way and her mom won't drop her! (sometimes it's hard to keep hold when she's excited!) Also, she used to HATE it when I'd bend over to pick something up when I was holding her, but now it doesn't bother her at all! The only time she does what you described....come up to me and then start walking or hopping backwards is after I've re-fixed her top knot or after I've tried clothes on her--she doesn't like either and is sort of gun shy that I might be doing it again! I don't know if that would work for you, but it would be worth a try. (The book said that everyone who picks her up needs to say the command before they lift her in the air, but that may be harder to get everyone to say it. I think it will still work for you if only you say it.) |
I'm glad I found this posting because my little guy does the same. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this!! |
Both of my Yorkies do that! Onni is especially bad about it. |
Lily won't "COME" even when she wants to!!lol She is doing real good with "potty on her pads" now and she even "SITS" to get a treat!! She will not "COME" no matter what and she "RUNS" like crazy if you try to catch her!! I know if she would get away from me outside she would get run over with a car because she runs from me bad!! I have tried everything. She isn't afraid to be picked up I don't think. She gets things in her mouth off the floor and it is horrible to try to catch her to see what she has in her mouth!! Scares me to death!! She had a paperclip the other day and I thought for sure she swallowed it but she didn't thank GOD!! STUBBORN!!lol |
Biggie does this sometimes too. He does it when he is super excited to go for a walk or for a car ride. I'll ask him to sit so I can put his leash on, he sits and then he's off. I always thought it was because he was excited..because he doesn't do it all the time. Maybe I need to watch how and when I stretch my arms out the get him. |
mine does this too... weird.... but the arm thing does make sense... you'd think they would get use to it after awhile. |
Yeah my boys do that sometimes too. Even funnier... they will jump on my legs to be picked up, when I reach down they will turn backwards and give me their butt to pick them up that way! I thought it was so weird the first time they ever did that... but they do it all the time and its been 3 years now, guess they just like being picked up so they face outward! haha My Dexter leaps into my arms when I bend down to pick him up... he wont even wait for me to reach down all the way, silly boy! :) |
Sapphire does this all the time! She's 3 now and I don't think she'll ever grow out of it. |
Yep Bella as well does this!! they are such game players!! at first i didnt know what to think, maybe she was scared of me or something but she is just a silly girl. by the looks of it they all are, i will know soon enough with a second edition to the family |
Harley my 4 mo old Peekapoo does the same thing. Our king size bed is very high. It came with steps...he'll whine to come up I hang off the bed and he runs. He whines at the stairs, won't go up or down them(we have about 30) go to get him he runs away. I don't have an answer. He thinks it's a game , I swear. I try calling him,or think he'll fallow the other dogs...NO GO. |
Sammie does this to me and my fiance. He gets so excited to see us, that he doesn't know what to do or how to act when it happens, lol. I think it's cute. |
Jewels does that too sometimes. I dont know why |
