My Yorkie is a Wild licker Hi everyone, I just thought I would post a quick thread here to ask if anyone else's Yorkie licks excessively? Our 7 month male, neutered, Yorkie is so friendly and happy. He loves to see both people and dogs and his greeting is a whole lot of licking! His tongue is going non-stop, often licking other dogs' faces - even in their mouths!! I do not know how to discourage this - some dogs don't like it and some people do not either. He is so friendly and happy and is not aggressive in any way and is quite submissive when needed around other dogs. Any suggestions or similar experiences would be appreciated. Thanks a lot and happy holidays everyone. :wavey: |
i completely understand LOL ... my bentley is the same way....he just licks, licks, licks...he is also very friendly and happy and just LOVES life...and he shows it by licking! :D it gets so bad that i have to clamp my mouth together otherwise he jabs his tongue into my mouth...i love him sooo much but that grosses me out! he will lick anything - arms, hands, faces, shirts, pants...i think he has an oral fixation or something hehe :) i hope someone has a suggestion or tells us this is normal ;) |
Reese is our lickalottapuss. He kisses EVERYBODY. Sometimes Ramsey turns her head to avoid Reese kisses. She's mean. |
:D Seems like a few more Yorkies are mad lickers. :) Thanks for sharing your stories! |
I am stealing this from another yorkietalker: I guess it is out of the bag... Cooper Just Can't hold his Licker!! |
Your yorkie is not alone! I have another lick-crazed yorkie here by my side. He licks everything! I think its just a yorkie thing. He's just so friendly and submissive. In the summer he will try and lick every inch of exposed skin and has a particular interest in feet! He "cleans" his favorite toys, his bed, everything! |
re: holding licker -- ha ha! :) seems like there are a few more Yorkies who "kiss" everything. Rocky once licked so much (licked the carpet, his blanket and the couch) that I think he threw up a big hairball!! Poor guy. |
Our Rocky is definitely a licker, too. Whenever I hold him, he always licks my shirts or anything really. If I go to pet him, he will automatically lick my hands....it's cute though.... |
My Jewels would lick me all day if I let her:rolleyes: |
Well its not only yorkies but my poodle went to town one day for 45 mins on my arm and then I stopped her. I wanted to see how long she would go. |

I am not 100% sure - is licking a sign of submission or possession? I am thinking it is a submissive behaviour. |

Thanks everyone for the great discussion. It seems like our little lickers are submissive, but happy with that. :) |
Just from observing the licking, I'd be inclined to say it seems like submissive behavior, BUT ... Bailley and Meggie are both tireless lickers, and Meggie is emphatically a little tyrant! She tries to bully her sister, and she tries it with us --- but we don't let her get away with it. I don't have any way of knowing, of course, but I believe it is simply a calming thing most of the time. I have found that both of ours will lay in bed and lazily lick on a hand or arm that is close by - a lot like a baby sucking on a pacifier when it's half asleep. Most of the time the licking is a LOT more vigorous, but maybe it's all the same. Either of ours will stop immediately if we say any of these - "Stop" "No Lick" or "Enough." Of course how long they stop doing it is another matter altogether. |
