This is not my dog... I referred an aquaintance of mine to my groomer. My groomer told me this lady lets her yorkie sleep outside year round in a crate. They have 2 dogs that sleep together. (So unacceptable.) Tonight I had dinner with a couple that live next door to the people that let their yorkie sleep outside. So I asked them if they knew if she really lets her dog sleep outside. Talk about opening a can of worms.......here it goes. The husband said yes the dog sleeps outside, and often he puts the dog back in the yard in the morning when he goes to work at 5:30 am. Their gate is broken and the dog gets out. (He has told them their gate is broken, and the dog gets out.) I am horrified. We all live in California, and the weather is starting to get cold. Besides the weather issues we have coyotes that rumble around trash cans every morning and evening. The wife (non yorkie owner) told me she has had coyotes in her yard, and she keeps her dog inside because of that. So this yorkie sleeps outside in the cold, has to out smart coyotes. Oh help! Then the wife (non yorkie owner) told me the current yorkie owner's last dog died from eating dry cement that was left in the yard. The dog got hungry and ate cement then drank from their pond. They put the dog down. This yorkie is doomed. What would you do? I don't want to do anything illegal, what would you do? I HAVE NO IDEA OF WHAT TO DO.:eek::eek::eek: |
that is really horrible. i don't know why she owns dogs if she doesn't care about them. maybe she is just uneducated about dogs? and she doesn't know that it's too cold for yorkies to sleep outside, and she doesn't realize the danger of keeping her dogs outside? if that's the case. maybe try taking to her about it. but if she is just a mean person who mistreats her animals, maybe you can report her? |
When she told my groomer that the dog slept outside the groomer gasped and held her chest, and told her NO NO NO these are inside dogs. She told her you have to have them sleep inside, the lady said she is a light sleeper so the dogs are outside. She was told. |
Do you know these people at all? Perhaps you could stop by and offer some kind of dog sitting services, or if you can afford it, help them get their gate fixed. I suppose you could call the humane society... I don't know if letting a dog sleep outside constitutes animal cruelty. On the other hand, a visit from some type of authorities might prompt the owners to take better care of the dog. |
I do know them, I just emailed her a note to say please bring your dogs inside the weather is getting cold. use ear plugs if your a light sleeper. I like your suggestion to get their gate fixed for them. I could dog sit, the problem is overnights. I hope my email will start a conversation to fix the situation. I will use your advice, and let her know it is animal abuse if she keeps them outside during this weather. |
You are awesome! It's so great that you are trying to help. |
I hope she chooses to bring them inside :( |
You should look into your state laws. I'm pretty sure if a temp falls below a certain degree , it is illegal to keep your dog outside overnight. At least, I think thats the law here in Mass. Check it out. Then a simple call to the dog officer may be in order. |
Sadly, I don't think it's considered animal abuse unless she leaves the dogs without food or water. The "breeder" that I got Lilly from keeps her mom & dad dogs in kennels outside in the cold. I'm not sure what to tell you to do, it sounds like you're already doing what you can do. |
How sad, I am so glad you are not afraid to get involved to help this baby. |
