New to YT and to Yorkies Hi Everyone! I am new to this board and to Yorkies in general. We have just recently decided to add a yorkie puppy to our family. I am nervous so I am doing as much research as I can beforehand. I am lucky that my cousin raises and breeds yorkies and is a reputable breeder so I have that hard part done with. I have a soon to be 7 year old daughter that loves ALL animals and is gentle with them , a persian cat who is 13 yrs old who I know will not have anything to do with the puppy as he lays in my bed most of the time and a 3 year old Himalayan who I am not sure how she will do. My cats are declawed however so I dont have to worry about scratches to the puppies face. We are getting a male puppy and he should be around 6 pounds when he is full grown. I am just hoping that all goes well with adding a puppy to a cat household. I am planning on training the puppy to use peepads, I read recently that I should place it inside a small litterbox and use that to teach him. I do have a pet door that goes inside my garage because thats where my cats litter boxes are . I am thinking about using baby gates to make him a small area when he goes through the door for him to have his peepads in . I dont want him to have access all over the garage and I will make a way for cats to get over the gate to get to their boxes still . I have read how hard yorkies are to housetrain and that is making me worry. I know its going to take hard work and patience to get him housetrained. I have read that they are barkers as well, Is there any tips on things to do as a puppy that may prevent them for barking alot when they grow up? Thanks in advance for any suggestions and insights on adding a Yorkkie to my family and any training tips and ideas. I want to know as much as I can before I bring him home in Feb. We just saw him for the first time on Thanksgiving and he was 2 weeks old then. We get to bring him home after he is 12 weeks old in Feb.My cousin has a dog trainer that comes in twice a week so by the time he comes home he will have had a few sessions already. Not sure if he will have learned anything , but its a start :) I plan on having a trainer with him as well since I dont really have to much knowledge on training dogs. Heres a few pictures I took at my cousins of her dogs and puppies My daughter holding one of my cousins yorkies http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/q...g/IMG_0065.jpg Kaylee holding one of my cousins yorkies. My daughter fell in love with this one and held her almost all of Thanksgiving. This is the puppy room, the puppies are in a playpen. This room is cool because it has a tunnel built into the floor the doggies can walk in to get outside into a nice enclosed area. As you can see they all got alot of love on Thanksgiving and another one of my cousins also picked out a puppy. This is her second one she has gotten from my cousin. I should have taken a closer picture because you cant hardly see the puppies, but trust me they were cute :) http://i457.photobucket.com/albums/q...g/IMG_0120.jpg |
Welcome to YT!!:) |
Thank you! I have been reading tons of useful information on the boards . What a great place YT is :) |
Welcome! I have yorkies and cats. They dont play together but they cohabitate well. Best of luck |
Welcome to Yt!!! We dont have any cats at home but on Thanksgiving, we went to my boyfriends mom's house and she has @ dogs; a shi tzu and a chiuaha/min pin mix and 3 cats and Juicy got along great with the cats. I'm sure it will all work out. :) |
W*E*L*C*O*M*E! I can't believe that your cousin breeds Yorkies and this is only your first one! Be prepared, they are very addicitive. I already want another and I just got my first 3 weeks ago :p As far as kids and Yorkies, alot of people say they don't mix well. I disagree. I have a 6 yr old, a 4 yr old, and a 3 yr old. They are soooooo careful with and around Missy. I really think it depends on the kid. :) Make sure to post pics when your baby is there. You must be about ready to burst waiting for him to arrive. |
Hi! :wavey: Welcome! :welcome4: :yorkiesar |
Thank you for all the welcomes :) I am glad to hear that others have had yorkies and cats and also visited other homes that had cats and everything was okay. I am hoping since we will be getting him as a puppy that hopefully he wont chase them all the time. I am getting more and more excited about getting him. We have a bit to wait still until he is 12 weeks old, but we get to see him Xmas eve when the family has Christmas at my cousins and I will take more pictures then. I cant wait to visit with him then and see how much he has grown since 2 weeks old :) |

Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! :D |
:welcome4: :aimeeyork :welcome4: How fortunate of you to be able to have a breeder in your family! You have a wonderful life source for your puppy! I will be difficult (I'm learning myself! I've had my little boy for week now!) but you will enjoy the learning experiences. When you see them do good things it just warms your heart! I don't have children, but I'm sure this is what it feels like. Best wishes to you and if you have questions YT is the best place to ask! Everyone here is very friendly and not so judgmental! |
