Have a female and just bought a male...have a question?
 
Let me just start by saying that I love yorkies and this website is great. We had a male for 11 years. He passed away last year due to Kidney failure. We were all heartbroken, especially my oldest son. So, we bought a new puppy the next day. We got a female, thinking we could breed her. Well, this week, we just bought a super cute male that I would love to breed with her...when he grows up :).

My question is, obviously I don't want to breed them every time she is in season. So, how do I keep them from doing...you know what??

Belly bands for the male might work.

Just be really careful and make sure you learn about all the things you would need to do. A few years back, a dear friend of mine bred her pomeranian girl. I don't think she was very prepared for the complications and lost her little girl and the puppies. :(

I dont have any experience breeding. (Dont think I have the guts to take it on) But there are many people on here who can give you very good advice. :)

Just remember that once you breed your male, he probably wont be that cute wonder pet anymore. He will turn into a marking machine!!
I would also do ALOT of research before you start breeding. There is more to it than meets the eye.

Thanks guys for the advice. I will look into the belly band. We are going to the vet next week for shots and a checkup, and I was going to talk to him about breeding. I will make sure I ask plenty of questions.
One good thing is that I am a stay at home mom, so I am here most of the time...to stay on top of things.

I knew that there was a possibility that my male would start marking, but I guess I'm an optimist :). My last male did go through phases when he would find some spots in the house and keep going back to them. But, mostly on the tile floor, and I did get him to stop.

It seems many people in my area have males and females. I honestly didn't think having both would be such a big deal. Like I said, I will ask my vet more questions, and I will also research as much as possible...which I was going to do anyway.

I will warn you that belly bands and or diapers will NOT stop them from breeding. They WILL find a way to get them out of the way.

A word of advice from a breeder of a few years:) Belly bvands for boys and diapers for girls WILL NOT work to keep them from mating. I know firsthand. What you are going to have to do IF after you research is to sseparate them during her heat cycle. You put one or the other in a crate part of the time then take turns crating them. perferably in another room becausse there has been cases of dogs mating thru the crate.

Dee, did you mean the belly bands and diapers will NOTwork? I sure would be scared to try!

To the OP- I hope you really consider all of the variables when thinking of breeding your pets. I hope you get the hundreds of dollars of genetic testing necessary for the parents, although positive results do not ensure congentital defect-free puppies. I also hope you consider the surplus of unwanted dogs, including pure-bred yorkies, as well as the fact you may lose puppies and/or mom. I hope you consider the hundreds or possible thousands of potential dollars in vet bills from emergencies with the mom or pups, and the fact you may not regain these costs selling the puppies, especially if the mother has a singleton.

Please read through threads in the Health and Sick & Injured section. You will see all the health issues that today's Yorkies are dealing with as a result of careless breeding by inexperienced owners. It seems almost daily we have a newbie with a Yorkie who has just been diagnosed with liver disease. The breed's current popularity has cost them dearly. :(

Did you know that Yorkies are now 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined according to a study done at the University of Tennessee? That Yorkies are ranked #4 in cases of luxating patellas by the Orthopedic Foundation of America?

A reputable breeder will offer at least a one year health guarantee on genetic defects. Should you produce any puppies with either of these conditions, you could be responsible for thousands of dollars in vet bills. As of now, there is no genetic marker for liver shunts so unless you know the background of your Yorkies many generations back, you are playing Russian Roulette with their future health.

Geez... Sorry. Seems like my questions have upset some members. Seems like negative assumptions about my intentions were made by people who don't even know me.
