Ah, it does my soul good to read the responses to this thread. I really do think those of us who appreciate small dogs are the enlightened ones. I was like many of you. For the first 40 years of my life, I didn't see the point in little dogs. Yappy. Nippy. Couldn't DO anything. Then we got one, and I was pleasantly surprised at what I found: He was just a dog. He could do anything a big dog could do, just on a smaller scale. I think a dog is a dog is a dog. You pick the one(s) that fits your lifestyle. It's that simple, and those who don't understand it are cheating themselves. |
I love both big and small dogs, I grew up with German Shepards. Why do you like small dogs over big dogs? They probably have the opposite reasons :) My dad wouldn't ever own a small dog, even though he loves ours, because he says "they aren't real dogs" lol, or they lick to much, or have too much energy, or he would accidentally step on one, or they bark too much. That's why people own different breeds and size of dogs. There is one for everyone :) |
I was just talking to my brother last night about this. When he found out I was getting a Yorkie he told me he was going to HATE it:mad:!!(he's staying with me and the bf for a while) When I asked him why, he told me pretty much the same story everyone else had, too small, its not a real dog, they bark too much etc...... But now that I have her he is head over heals in love with her:luvu:. every morning I get up at 4am, bring Daisy down stairs to do her business she eats a little then she runs over to "Uncle Dustin" and falls asleep right on his chest. Sometimes its so hard to pry them apart lol!( I get a little jealous sometimes! lol:p) I guess pretty much everyone is going to say the same thing about small dogs. That is until they get one, or someone close to them gets one and they realize there not as bad as they thought. They can do pretty much the same things a "big dog" can do:wink: |
I love all dogs... :) Ive had big ones, medium size ones and little bitty ones. Right now I am the proud owner of 4 different breeds a sheltie, beagle, toy poodle and my baby yorkipoo. However I do "perfer" the smaller ones. When we first got our little poodle my husband wanted nothing to do with her because he thought she was "pathetic" not really a dog. lol. Today you cant get the 2 of them apart. He will not go to sleep untill she is in the bed with us and she waits for him by the door every day at 5 when she knows he will be home and now he says that he will never own another big dog again. :) |
I love all dogs big and small. But smaller breeds fit my lifestyle better and my size. I'm '10 and willl never see over 5 feet. so having a golden retriever or a german sheperd(would love one) is not practical. It would walk me :S I do understand however, bigger dogs can be wrestled with and play rough with without worrying about hurting the dog. That is why my hubby wants his big dog so he can have a dog that he can play fight with and have a challenge with. and also hunt with. |
I never gave it a thought, actually. We had a GS for 17yrs and loved that boy to death. He never gave us one minute of grief. He was a rescue we got at 1yr old. He and my son were joined at the hip for all those years. My reason for getting a Yorkie was I am now living in a condo and it made sence to get a little dog. To compare the two at this point I can honestly say that a big dog was sooooooooo much easier to raise. The big dog did what dogs do. Eat, play, sit, lay, poop and sleep. A Yorkie is like raising a two year old FOREVER. They do what they want, own their owner, boss you around and actually THINK and Talk to you demanding you meet their needs.:p I do not consider a Yorkie a dog. They don't act like one IMO. I never realized a dog could be so human like until Buddy. Big dogs are much easier to raise, IMO. |
i love all dogs, ive got a 9yearold yorkie, a 18monthold white boxer and a 5yearold tomcat - they are like peas in a pod! they get on fine (: |
I dont like big dogs better. All I have ever owned were small dogs |
I have always had big dogs. I have a 10 yr old Lab. I had always thought little dogs were cute and had met some that were not spoiled little ankle biters. So a little over a year ago I decided I wanted another dog. We have a small house with a small yard so I decided we were getting a small dog. At first my husband objected and I said you never helped me with our lab [which was "his" dog who he was supposed to walk all the time and take swarming!] So I read up on small dogs, I didn't want a yappy one. So it came down to either a Chinese Crested or a Yorkie so we ended up getting both and in the end the Yorkie was my husbands first choice. He loves these little guys as much as he loves our Lab. At first he tried not to but he is a softy! |
When I lived in the country big dogs were the way to go. They were big enough to take care of themselves outdoors, they were big enough to intimidate people when we were not home ...and even when we were. I absolutely adore Rottweilers. LOVE them. But, since I have moved to town it comes down to this choice..... Big land mine that I have to deactivate, or a small land mine that takes care of itself......nuff said. However, if space was not an issue, big or small I'd take them all! |
I have a sheltie too..they are awesome! full of energy...and a bark that deff will pierce right through you. lol Quote:

I hear this from a lot of people, including my husband. We have always had large dogs - from german shepard dogs, irish wolfhound, dobermans, and many labs. My husband always Poo Poohed having small dogs until we got our two little yorkie girls. You should see how in love he is with them. The older puppy likes to start to go poo on the wee wee pad but then runs really fast and scatters her poo. Well, DH now holds her in place on the pad until she finishes. What a sight that is, LOL! Now that is love. HAHA He still can't get used to my dressing them in dresses though but he is coming around. |
ummmm....one "little" reason why I like small dogs better indoors is, I'd rather clean up "little" poo accidents - rather than big ones!!! |
