1.5yr YT & New Pup Hey everyone. I have a 1.5 yorkie lady and just brought home last night a 8 week old Goldendoodle boy! Unfortunately my yorkie doesn't really care for the new pup. Inside she barely will come near him, and stands there with her mouth shut so long that she starts to drool (I've never seen her do this before). Outside he started waddling around and she got angry and tried to scrap with him. I broke it up immediately and took her to her timeout room. He was just kind of oblivious to what she was doing. She still cuddles with me, gets attention, and is eating, just stays on the oppsite side. I've read that it can take a month or two for older dogs to get used to the new pups, but I would appreciate some more specific advise. Some people have said to let them scrap.. but he's a puppy? Others have said to do what I did and make sure she know's it's unacceptable to fight, but let her still feel him out. I've read to kenel or pen him up away from her when we're gone so she can be in the same room, but not fight. I'm would appreciate any and all advise on these specifics. I'm not worried over all. I can be very patient and will work to make things go smoothly. I am just hopeful you have some advise to make it go a little easier. Thanks in advance! ^_^ |
Just wanted to say congratulations on your new furbaby. Sorry I cannot give any advice, since I only have one.... But, hope you enjoy YorkieTalk and Welcome! :) |
Congrats on your new baby! You will find tons of helpful info here! Welcome to YT!!:) |
Always pick up the older or first dog before the new puppy. Do your best to show the same amount of attention to the first dog as you did before. Let her know that she is still in the #1 spot. Give her a treat or set her food down first. Always greet her first, because she was first. This should help. She is probably trying to let the new dog know that she is first or alpha over him. It does take about a month for them to get use to the new kid on the block. My two yorkie girls were about the same age difference when I got the 2nd one. Everyone told me not to get 2 females because they would fight or not like each other, but I have never had a problem. They are now 4 and 3 and are the very best of friends. Showing them equal attention and probably the 1st dog a little more or extra is the key. That way they don't feel like their spot is being taken over with you. Congrats and welcome, I hope this helps. |
Congratulations. I always had one dog at a time and 3 years ago brought home a 9 week old yorkie weighing 1 lb and I had a 8 year old 10 lb pom. My pom is not very friendly but pretty much ignored Cali. SInce them I have brought in 3 other yorkies, sadly one had congenital kidney failure and I ony had her 5 weeks. When Cali was 1 1/2 I brough tin Pixie who was 1 year old and Cali was upset with me put she is very laid back and let Pixie take over as leader. Whenever I bring in a new one, I let them get use to each other and never let them alone together until I am sure they are safe. Whenever I left the new one was crated but left in the same room so they could safely interact. The only problem I have now is Roxie and Pixie pick on Cali who is the larger of the 3. As long as you have patience and show your 1.5 year old a lot of extra attention they should be ok. Keep us posted. |

Give them time. Lots of walks and playtime together will make them form a pac. |
Yeah I've made sure to give her the same amount of absurd attention she normally gets ;) , and I make her sit next to me on the couch when he's up there too. He's been up and walking today and less emo, which has made Bella(yorkie) uneasy. She freaks out at random when he gently sniffs her and he wines and goes back to his bed. Should I allow this? I want him to feel comfortable walking about, but isn't it good for Bella to establish her space to him? I've been scolding her... should I pick her up, let her go at him? Thanks for any advise. Again... still patient and I know it'll take awhile. Just helps put me at a little more ease when I have advise on specifics. Thanks ^_^ |
Squirt had a very bad reaction, hiding, shaking & drooling when I brought Gus home. However, Squirt is a lot older than your guy. They get along very well now, and Squirt is a lot more energtic than he was before Gus arrived. |
It took Spike about 3 months for him to get used to Triss. Now, they sleep and cuddle together every night. Best buds! |
