Questions about adding a yorkie to the family....please help! Hi there! I am new to this site....but have been reading all of the wonderful posts (great information). I am not sure if I should be a member yet...because I don't own a yorkie yet. We have two shihtzus (a brother and sister) that are now 1 1/2 years old. They are my babies and I love them! I have had the puppy itch again, for quite some time and I just love yorkies. So here are my questions.... Should I be looking for a male or female to introduce to this close brother and sister team? Syd and Lexy (my shihtzus) have their routine -- how do you think they would do with another little pup? I guess I just want to do the right thing for the two I have...and also, for a new addition. I am not sure if I should just leave things the way they are -- or add on to the family. Lexy is alpha and Syd is a little more passive. We still have trouble on our walks (Syd barks uncontrolably at every dog he sees)...but is not an aggressive guy. Any suggestions/opinions would be greatly appreciated. |
Females are usually alpha dog ...so a little yorkie brother would probably be best. good luck:D |
Welcome to YT!! Of course you should be a member!! I do not have a yorkie yet either. There are a few members that I know of that don't have their yorkie yet. I'm soo glad I found this site before getting one. I have learned, and am still learning so much about yorkies!!:) |
BTW, there are lots of members that have 6 packs, and a few different breed dogs. I think if you add another everything will be just fine!! |
Good luck on your decision, I think yorkies are the "big" little dogs. I hear they get along with most breeds if you introduce them as puppies not an adult yorkie. |
Looks like you received some great answers above. So, I just wanted to say Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! :) |
I too have a shih tzu, she's 8 years old now and we just got a new yorkie puppy. My shih tzu does not care for the puppy at all! I didn't really think she would have a hard time accepting a puppy, as we've added 2 kittens to our household in the last couple of years and she's done great with them. But she's not liking the puppy at all and even seems scared of her. It's only been a week, so I'm hoping she will warm up to her soon. In the maintime, the puppy is having great fun playing with a kitty that we're babysitting! I hope she doesn't end up thinking she's a kitty! I'm sure things will work out. It just takes some time for all of them to get used to each other. Good luck with your decision! |
Hello and welcome to YT. You'll love it here. |
Thanks to everyone! Firefly - how is your little shihtzu doing now? Did he warm up to his sibling? We went to go see a breeder on Friday. The breeder was kind enough to let Syd and Lexy come along ... just to see how they would do with the puppies and mothers. Lexy, immediately decided she was a yorkie and was playing and following the herd everywhere they went. My Syd on the other hand, was not impressed. If one of the little ones would come too close he would bark and show his teeth. I want a yorkie so much - but now I don't know what to do. I just wish Mr. Syd would lighten up and love other dogs! It is probably one of those things that would take time - I just don't want anyone getting hurt in the meantime. Thanks again for all of the comments and the warm welcome! I WANT A YORKIE TOO!!!! |
I tend to go for the females myself. I have one male(out of 6 dogs), and I love him to death, but, when I see the other males(my sons yorkie) going around lifting his leg and peeing(even though he's been neutered), I realize I was very lucky with the little guy I got. If the dogs have all been spayed/neutered, then you shouldn't have a problem with a male or female |
I just spoke to another breeder that has a 6 month old male yorkie. She was going to use him for show - but is not going to now because of his second set of teeth. Do you think a 6 month old would be easier to introduce or should I get a younger puppy? |

I just brought home my little girl 2 weeks ago(she was 5 1/2 mos), and I just sat her on the floor with the other 3 dogs and let them smell her. Within 10 minutes, the shih tzu, that is going on 11 years, was wanting to play with her. All 3 of the other dogs are very protective of her, and the other biewer I have, just started actually playing with the new one a couple days ago(I've had the new one 2 1/2 weeks now) |
