Male vs.Female
 

We are prepared to buy a yorkie. In fact I have talked to two different breeders. One I can get a 12 wk. old girl from and the other I can reserve a 6 wk. boy. I had always planned on getting a girl, but several breeders I have spoken with ( not the one trying to sell the boy dog )have said the boys make more loveable "lap" dogs and have less of an "attitude". Can anyone tell me their experience or is this just personal opinion? I also realize it depends on the individual dog personality, but is there an overall conception? I would appreciate any responses.

I have a male and a female. My female is my lap dog not my male. He would rather play then lay on my lap. My female won't stay oof my lap. or shoulder or any where on us. She also follows us around everywhere. She is 5 months old and the male is 4 yrs old but she is definitly more loving than my male.

My female is just a year old. Same as gidgetsmom above. Always on us and follows us around constantly. Won't be without us in sight. Very loving and loyal. I personally like a female, because as male will lift it's leg and pee on the furniture (or maybe your leg?).

I have heard that males are harder to potty train, but I was told that. So I am not sure.

Well...i have a male who is my shadow. Follows me everywhere and i have never seen a dog so loveable like him. He never lifted his leg anywhere (even before being neutered). I have heard for many breeders that females have more of an "attitude" than males...i think each case is a case, but in my expecience i have seen that males are usually more easygoing than females.

Either way...you won;t regret getting a yorkie...so congratssssss!!

Thanks. That helps a lot. I really wanted a girl and so does my daughter! I was also worried about the leg lifting thing with a boy although they say a neutered dog most of the time won't, but my brothers' boston terrier still does and he is like 4 yrs. old or so, so I don't trust that!! Especially since I'm "hoping" the dog will piddle pad train and will go inside most of the time, even as an adult. I am so excited, I just go off of the phone with a third breeder I had been trying to contact that has 2 girls to choose from, 8 weeks, that already has their tails docked at a price I am very comfortable with - so, I may have my baby by Saturday!! :)

I have a boy and a girl. My boy is my constant companion and cuddler. My girl is more independent. They were equally hard to potty train, and I had my boy neutered at 6 months and he has never lifted his leg (he is now 1 year old). I really don't think boy or girl makes a difference, I think it is more personality, so, I would go with the breeder that you feel is better and the dog that you like the best, regardless of the sex. I would deffinately get a female,mainly becuase boys hike their legs and sometimes neutering doesnt fix this..which means most males are harder to potty train.
A woman on another board had to find a new home for her 1 year old male a few weeks back because he was peeing all over the place,he was fixed at 6 months old and this didnt help.His new owner is now facing the same problem.I dont think I have the patients to deal with males..lol.
I have 2 females and they are both lap dogs,my oldest female is more dependant on us but they are both very affectionate.I had also heard that females arent as affectionate as males,but to me hygene was more of an issue than anything else and the rumour about females wasnt really true anyway.

I too befor getting a yorkie had always wanted a little girl... well I ended up getting my Little Beaker Boy and i wouldnt change him for nothing... not even for 100 little girls.... He is soooo sweet and also follows me around all day and is calm as can be... he is 4 months old and has never lifted his leg..... and even though he is a boy he still gets bows in his hair... I think you should just get one of each..
I have a boy but also remember that girls are made of or sugar and spice and everything nice...lol

I think you are right when you say it's each "individual dog personality". I think a lot of it has to do with gentics as far as personality and disposition goes. Like we humans..some of us are sweet or gentle or nice and some of us are not. I have a male malt that was neutered, has never hiked a leg, was a breeze to house break but is aggressive and yappy, he does follow me around and is my constant shadow. My female yorkie is very sweet natured, very gentle in spirit , rarely barks, can cuddle and be held for hours but is a challenge in the housebreaking, she's also my shadow. So you see, we all have a varity of types with male and females. What I recommend is you get what you want because you may not be satisfied until get your little girl. I wanted a female maltese and went with a male becasue female maltese are out of my price range and the availabilty of female pups was limited. I had 3 sons so I tend to want to do the girly thing..pink bows, pink or purple leashes, girlie stuff and after getting my malt I still had the desire for a girl. So when I searched and waited for my yorkie I wouldn't even consider getting a male. It took me longer but I'm glad I waited. I finally have my very own baby girl. I know tons of people whom have sweet little boys and I also know tons of people whom have sweet little girls.

I have had both in my life (and Im not young anymore)...I have always seen better in a female.

Everyone I know personaly has had "marking territory" problems with their males, even neutered.

Again, this is only my opinion and I wish you the best in your choice of Yorkies. (but I hope it's a female yorkie :p )

I have one of each. Maddie is very lovable and follows me everywhere. Rudy is the my youngest and is a little toot, he also follows me everywhere and isn't as lovable as Maddie. My first yorkie Max was the most loveable dog. It's a personality thing. When I got Maddie and Rudy I just wanted a yorkie and after I found a good breeder I just went and looked and picked me the one that I liked the most, I was lucky both breeders had both females and males. Regardless which one you get you will love it to death no matter what bad habits it has, I know I do...................Cindy

Well, I have to make a plug for the boys. My Bentley is a lover and has the best personality. He also has never lifted his leg to pee (he squats) and does not have marking problems. Breeders I talked to when looking for Bentley's brother also told me that they preferred the boys. Keep in mind that I have never had a girl, but my little boy is Wonderful - so wonderful that we have to get another one!

I agree with Bently's Mom.. Boys are the best.. I heard it once said that "girls love you but boys are in love with you"
Housetraining is only as good as the trainer.. I know someone who obtained a 3 year old un-neutered male who marked everywhere and trained him to only go outside successfully.
Makes it pretty tough to decided I know but it sounds like you had your heart set on a girl from the start.. Best of luck.
