Im getting a yorkie and need advice Hi, Im new to this board and have benefited so much from the advice that is given here! I am getting my yorkie next friday! :) I am sooooo excited, I've been trying to read as much as I can to prepare myself. I am hoping some of you can help me with some questions that I have. When should I take my yorkie to the vet? I was thinking of taking her the day I got her but Im afraid it would be too much for her for one day. She is only going to be 8 weeks when I get her, so I dont want to freak her out. The breeder is feeding her Eukanuba but I wanted to possibly change that to Wellness or Canidae because I've read good reviews about them, How should I go about doing this? Do I give her a little of both at first? I would appreciate ANY advice. I just want to make sure everything is right for my little baby when she gets here!! |
They say that you should take the babies within the first 2-3 days. We got Annie on a Thursday and then took her to the vet on Saturday. I don't think it should be too traumatic to take the puppy on the first day cause the first check-up the vet just checks the pup out so long as they are up to date on their shots. Annie first shots with us were at 10 weeks. We also got her at 8 weeks and she had just gotten her 8 week shots right before we got her. As far as the food goes they slowly mix in a portion of the old stuff with the new stuff. ie ( 80% old 20% new then maybe 50% old and 50%) They say the dogs stomachs can get upset if you give them all of the new stuff at once. |
I took both of mine to the vets the first day home just to be sure everything was ok.Lady was 7 weeks old when I got her and Jessie was just 8 weeks. They both had their forst shots at 6 weeks old and then every week until they were completed. To change their food, you just have to do it slowly.Add some new kibble to their usual kibble and add a little more each day until he is totally on the kibble of your choice.Keep some nutrical handy too, this is to keep your new babies sugar level up and after the stress of the first couple of days its always better to be safe than sorry:) Congratulations on your new baby:) |
Well congrats on the new puppy! Is it a boy or girl? Do you have a name picked out yet?? I agree with the advice above about switching food - start with 75% of the old and 25% of the new, then 50% of each, then 25% old and 75% of the new, then all of the new. This is how I switched Hercules and he did fine. I feed Hercules Eukanuba puppy small breed, and he likes it. I took Hercules to the vet 2 days after I brought him home. Good luck and keep us posted! |
Thanks for all the advice!! I made an appointment with the vet for the day after she gets here! :) I've named her Roxy! I wish I could post a picture but I dont know how.. I also wanted to ask for some suggestions on pet insurance. I've been looking around and so far Healthy Bark and Purr seems like a good one. |
Hi, and welcome so much to Yorkietalk. You have already received such a great amount of good advise from the above posts. I just want to welcome you and to congratulate you on Roxy. I bet your excitement to receive her is overwhelming. In the meantime until you get her, head to the book store if you can and get some Yorkie books, they are so good for useful info to keep relating back to. If you don't want to buy books you can always go to the library. Unfortunatley Yorkies are not little dogs you just can put down food and water and "leave the room"...They need a lot of loving care and attention. (might as well thinking of her as your own child, hahaha) Wish you the best with Roxy and good luck with posting pics. Oh, we all here at Yorkietalk love the pictures. You can download Irfanview 3.95 and it let's you resize pictures that you can post. When you receive Roxy and still have troubles posting pic's, just post a thread and I am sure one of us here can help you with it. (well do anything for pictures, hahahahah) I am envious, I would love to get a new pup. My Schatzie is almost 9 months and my sweet joy day and night...Love her to pieces!! :p |
