1st time owner, Is it normal for my Yorkie to be shaking!!! Hey I just purchased my first dog which is a yorkie and after the first week i have it. i noticed that its been shaking and trembling like it cold at times. the first time it happen he was shaking alot so i took him back to the pet store and they said he was fine and that its normal for them to shake sometimes like that.. since then he shake sometimes when im holding him or when he is laying on the floor.. i just want to know if this is a normal thing or is something wrong with him. |
with yorkies or small breeds nutrical is good. sometimes when stressed or anything they can get low sugar and this helps. If you dont have it then kayro syrup will work too just a tiny bit rubbed on the gums |
I see you say you bought him from a pet store? Have you taken it to your vet for a wellness visit after you got him? I say this since some Pet Stores are known to not have the healthiest of dogs. If he continues to shake unprovokingly(not cold, startled or seeming stressed), I would definitely let a vet get a look at him. Best of luck and keep us posted. Welcome to YT! |
Well his shaking started the day after i took him to the vet that comes to that pet shop twice a week. so i will try and him to a vet outside of the pet shop sometime this week just to make sure everything is on the up and up. |

The vet did give him something in the mouth. but it was for his cold. because we took him there because he had a cold and was caughing and sneezing with runny noose. |

I would take him to a vet right away that isn't associated with the store. I would also give the puppy Nutracal (or honey or Kayro Syrup) and make sure he's being kept warm. I use a warm water bottle and a space heater in my puppies area of the home. She wears a sweater when she's out in the main area of the house. How old is your puppy, and how much does he weigh? |
my molly did that as a pup the nutrical stuff is good or sugar water they grow out of it |
yea i did get nutracal from the pet shop. my girl friend has been the one taking care of the dog mostly and she said she hasnt been giving the dog the nutracal as much as she suppose to be.. how much times a day is he suppose to be get that anyways.. that could be the reason for him to be shaking as well huh? |
When I got Missy 2.5 weeks ago, I had to give her the Nutracal about 4 times per day giving 2-3 pea size amounts each time. I did this for a few days, until I noticed her getting better and better, so I gradually cut back on the Nutracal and now she's been 3 full days without. I also tried to get her to eat after every time she had it. I guess the protein in the food helps them digest the Nutracal properly. |
Has he been getting enough exercise? If he's shaking all the time, it's probably a stress reaction. My guy used to do that when I first met him, and I took it as a sign that he was understimulated, mentally and physically. It doesn't happen to him anymore unless he is really in a state, like someone dropped food under the picnic table and I'm not letting him get to it. |
One of two things come to mind....he is cold or he is frightened. Yorkies don't usually have the shakes like you see in chihuahuas. Personally I don't think puppy has a cold...it sounds like kennel cough. I would also advise taking puppy to a vet that's not affiliated with the pet store |
I just got my puppy a little over a week ago, and ive noticed that she too shakes. but only when she is tired, in the car or when someone she does not know picks her up. I too am hoping that she will get over the shaking thing. it makes me nervous! I have her at work with me today, and she hates it! I feel so bad because she has to stay here with me, (I live an hour away) :( but im sure after her nap she will feel better! anyways dont get too worked up right now, he might just be scared. give him a day or two to get used to you and your home and he should get better. if not make sure you take him to another vet, outside of the pet store! Welcome to YT its the best!!! |
