Coat Question Hello, I am new here. I have a question about Yorkie Coats. My dog is a little over a year old, and her coat is brittle and breaks off easy, there fore it is not very long. Is there a vitamin or something I can give her? She does not appear to have dry skin and does not itch at all, but I find hair everywhere and her coat is only about 1 1/2 inches long. She is otherwise healthy and active. Oh, and her coat is more of a coarse feeling. Still soft and silky, but kind of coarse too. Any ideas? |
Omega 3 and 6 with some Vitamin E are great for the coat!! |
At a year old and 1.5 inches of length it's likely the genetic makeup of the pup. Some have longer coat, some silky, some cotton, the texture and length of the coat is of prime importance in the breeding but proper coat is elusive to say the least. The "red legs" are typically darker in color but have the shorter, coarser coat. |
It might not be breaking off just transitioning into an adult coat. By 1 1/2 years he might have a very nice coat. What do you feed? |
Thank you for the responses. I am feeding her Science Diet Skin and Coat, and giving her the Omega 3 with vit. E already. I don't know anything about the "red leg" I believe someone said, but she does have the darker red legs and the very dark/black back. She never did really turn silver or blue, so maybe she is from that line. I don't worry much about her because I know she is healthy. I just see all the others that are long, or very soft looking and was wondering what the reason was. The funny thing is, is that she does have the nice long facial hair, it is just on her back and body that doesn't seem to grow much. Thanks again. |
You could try a different food. Look up what you are feeding on this site then look at the 5-6 star foods. Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost It could be the Science diet. |

I would try a better food It may help some but her hair just may not grow all the way in. |
Oh lord that happened to my Halle. She was allergic to beef protein. I would change the food asap! Take the dog to the vet as this is not normal at this age. Paula:) Halle:aimeeyork Brutis:aimeeyork |
SD is by far not the best food. The link shows other brands of foods and perhaps to pick out another that might be better for your baby. Your certain brand isn't on there, but here is the SD puppy Dog Food Reviews - Science Diet Nature's Best Puppy Original (Archived) - Powered by ReviewPost |
There are 3 pages of science diet Dog Food Reviews - All Products - Powered by ReviewPost |
Ok, thanks for the info. I think I will search out another brand of dog food. I live in a remote area and some of those brands I have never seen or heard of before so I am thinking it won't be easy to find some of those but I will certainly look. Funny that our veterinarians really push that science diet as the best thing there is. Thanks again for all the info. |
