New furbaby..need assistance! Hi everyone! I just brought Sylar home. He cried a lot during the car ride but he's okay now and super friendly. He eats when I put food out for him and he's peed twice since we've brought him home but still no poopie. Also, his hair is really notted and tangly..I don't know how to untangle it without hurting him. He still needs his rabies shot and bordetella shot so I don't think I can take him to a groomer because I asked the lady at Petco and she said they have to have their bordetella shot. I'm so nerrrvous! Any advice would greatly help. |
WELCOME! and welcome to Sylar. How old is he? If he is still quite young i would not get the bordetella shot- especially not the same day as the rabies- it's too hard on their little systems. as for the knots- just get a brush and start working at them- or a comb- go slow and they will eventually all come out. since it is his first day home and he is adjusting it might take a bit for a poop to appear :) |
Maybe if you could put some conditioner and water in a spray bottle and spritz the tangles and then try to brush them out, it would help. If that doesn't work, get a product called, Cowboy Magic. It really helps with tangles!! It's for horses, but is safe for a puppy. Good Luck with your new baby. I hope he brings you many years of Joy! |
Tammy took my thought...well about spritzing him with some conditioner... :o) I wouldn't worry about the poo poo not making an appearance since he's had an emotional time... I'm sure it will work its way out...lol Sorry couldn't help it... I love the name... :D |
I was going to schedule on Dec 14 for his Bordetella shot, how long after that should I wait for Rabies shot? Thanks so much for your replies, him not pooping really got me worried. |

Hello! Good luck with your new little guy, and the tangles. My new little one doesn't really have any tangles yet (we try to brush him at least a tiny bit every day), but I'm sure it'll happen eventually, so thanks a lot for posting this question. :-) The conditioner spraying thing is just genius, thanks for sharing! Lauren & Nikko PS: Sylar is a really neat sounding name. What inspired it? |

Wire Brush Here's a recent thread on wire brushes. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...rting-him.html Test your wire brush, by brushing your arm, to see if it hurts or scratches. |
Tangles I went to Pet Supplies Plus and purchased a very small comb. It is probably no more than 4 inches long and is made by Lil'l Pals. It has very thin, close together teeth on one side and a little wider teeth on the other. It is totally awesome on LuLu. I hold the matted area underneath and work with it, so it doesn't pull her skin. Also, I purchased (from Walmart) Hartz Infusions Conditioning Spray. It moisturizes and detangles and does not require rinsing. It also has an Ocean Mist scent. Since I started using these items, LuLu very seldom gets any mats anymore. Good Luck!:aimeeyork |
Feet I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions to help our furrbabies like grooming any better. LuLu hates it. It is a battle to do anything with her feet. She is beginning to like the rest of her body more, but still bites the comb. I have even given her a brush go chew on or a plastic hanger or toy.....she still battles me with her feet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Daizy was just like that when I first got her.....and all I did was just keep doing it...and each time afterwards I would give her a special treat that she loved only after her grooming. Now she sits still and waits expectantly for her treat when I am done. It does take time...it took months before Daizy would sit still. Now I get to start all over with my new baby Tulip and she's actually worse than Daizy was...lol she'll bite anything that comes near her mouth and she's so squirmy ...she makes it very hard...lol using her feet too!! So Good luck...I feel your pain..hehe |
My Daisy is 19 weeks old and I have found the trick to lots of tangles with her but I also rescued a s**tzu and a cocker spaniel in my past. Use a human wide tooth pick and kids No More Tangles. It works wonders. I bathe Daisy in Kids shampoo, not baby shampoo but kid shampoo that has the conditioner in it. The wide tooth pick doesn't pull her fur as bad as the brush. Daisy HATES being brushed but she will literally go get her pick at night and bring it to me. Don't worry about the poop for a few days. Daisy went thru that too. You may have changed her food but even if you didn't, the vet told me that these little furbabies are easily stressed out and their digestive tracts are usually where they show their stress. As far as the shots go, I am only getting Daisy the required shots because I agree with the other person that dogs tend to be over vaccinated. But, then again, my husband is a naturalist, too. Hope I helped some. |
