recommend a good dog book please hello, i would like to start a thread so we can recommend dog books that we've read that we recommend. (because i would love to read more good dog books:D) i would like to recommend 2 dog books that i really liked! 1. Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan you can read an excerpt here: ABC News: Excerpt: 'Marley and Me' 2. a rare breed of love by Jana Kohl I open my eyes and find myself in a soft, comfy bed, not a wire cage. The house is filled with sweet, peaceful silence, not the desperate cries of dogs. And then there's her. She calls herself "Ma." After she adopted me I didn't know what to expect. After years of being locked in a cage, I had lost all hope of ever being treated with kindness, but from the moment she touched me, I was smitten. Whenever she picks me up or strokes my head, she is careful, soft, gentle. She doesn't grab me. She never hurts me. She feeds me delicious food, as much as I need to feel satisfied. There is always fresh, cool water in my bowl. She actually kisses me. A lot. And sings to me. And lets me sleep pressed against her. I'm not afraid anymore. I have a name, not a number. I am loved now. – Excerpt from A Rare Breed of Love you can read more about the book at it's website: About Baby - A Rare Breed of Love |
I cried SO hard reading Marley and Me- i coudln't see the words- not sure ill make it through the movie! |
Good idea for a thread. :) I'm always looking for books with animals in them, at the library. Right now I am enjoying the Melanie Travis Mystery series. the author is Laurien Berenson. The main character shows poodles and the plot is always wrapped around something to do with dogs. |

Oh my gosh, The Loved Dog by Tamar Geller is one of the absolute BEST books I have ever read concerning dogs and training. It's a must read for every dog owner! :) |
I really liked The Loved Dog and Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies. I am currently reading The Gift of Jazzie. It is hilarious and heartwarming. It's by a newspaper columnist who was given a YT puppy out of the blue after the death of her husband. It's an amazing story! |

I love this thread! Great idea!!!!!!! I have a ton. All I read about are dogs!! Dog Body, Dog Mind. ![]() That is my top recommendation. It explores the consciousness of dogs. The book goes into the amazing ways in which dogs are MORE conscious and aware then humans, discusses how they experience death and mourning, how they experience love, ect. It is written by a scientist, but its extremely readable and well written. If anyone ever says to you, "But its just a dog!" - and you are at a loss for words as to how to explain that, no, our dogs are not "JUST" anything!! This book is over a 100 pages of backup on why dogs are not "JUST" dogs, they are conscious beings, deserving of love and care and they ARE aware of the love they receive. I can't say enough how much comfort, laughter and understanding this book brought to me. It taught me tons about how to effectively communicate and understand my dogs. ITS AN AWESOME book. I also loved For the Love of Dogs ![]() Same principle as above, but more detailed on experiencing emotions and the writer's experiences with dogs from the perspective of a behaviorist, rather then a scientist... How Dogs Think by Stanley Coren is a good one, too! ![]() If you are interested in nutrition, the pet food industry and last years pet food recalls, then Dog Food Politics is a great book. It gets down deep into the pet food industry's corruption and how the pet food recall which killed and injured so many pets happened and how it could easily happen again. ![]() |
Good Thread. I have read this book and laughed the whole way thru it. It's a true story about a shelter dog that was adopted in California by an actress. It's called: The Diary of Jinky, Dog of a Hollywood Wife by Carole Raphaelle Davis. Here's the website in case you want to take a look. HollywoodJinky.com You can buy it on Amazon.com |
What a great thread! I loved Marley & Me, even though it made me cry. And I love the Melanie Travis mysteries, too! Other books, hmm... The Cesar Millan books are good as well. |
