Did Neutering Change Your Dogs Behavior? Please Help. Some of you know the story of Panne, who I call Max. I'm having a trial session with him, but he is marking in the house and constantly sniffing my dogs privates. I decided it would be best to neuter him to see if that changes his behavior, but it is $200-$300 out of my pocket. Yesterday, a person I might pet sit for came over to look at our house. They said their dog did not change at all when he got neutered, and that the sniffing is really annoying of Max (they said it in a polite way, just saying am I sure I want to spend that much on him). I'm wanting to hear other peoples stories on if neutering changed their dog in any way. I would have to cancel the appointment today. Thank you, Vanessa |
I think if you plan on keeping "Max" then get him neutered, weather it helps with his issues or not its always a good thing to do. Ive never personally had a male so I never had to get one neutered, but my aunts dog did calm down a bit afterward. Are you sure you want to keep this dog? The only reason I ask is because Ive read a lot of what you post and it seems like your unsure of it! If thats the case then theres really no reason to spend the money, the sooner you make your decision the sooner Max can find a new home. Im not trying to discourage you, but if you are this unsure about keeping him then maybe you shouldnt! I hope everything works out! |
it can take a few weeks before you see changes in his behaviour from nutering. I waited until mine was 3, but only because I was back and forth about it. He is less roam-y and seems to listen better. He still attacks his toys with abandon tho!! |
I only have one male, got him at 5 1/2 mos on a Sunday, and took him in to be neuterd that next day. He has always been a sweetie, he humps my one yorkie occasionally(not anything sexual, just to try and be dominant), and they do change, for the best..They don't care if a female is in heat, so, they don't go taking off out the door everytime there is a female within a mile away that is in heat, they don't go around humping everyones legs, they have less chance of getting certain cancers, and they are much more loving..so, do they change??? Yes, but, it's all for the best! |
I did not see any change in Gus' behavior. However, he did not mark before, and did not start after. I was hoping neutering would calm him down, but it didn't. A couple of weeks ago, I gave him the bed he humped before neutering, and he started to hump it. So, I took it away again. I'm glad I got him neutered, because I'd always be wondering if it would have settled him down. |
Thanks Bill, you always help me with this little guy. I called the vet and he is scheduled for a urine test analysis before the neuter, which is $45. There should be no problem getting a sample, he pees on everything! I don't think the person was convinced I knew what I was talking about (I'm not sure if I did..), but they were really nice and helpful. Thanks everyone else for the suggestions. I think I will go ahead and get him neutered because I know that if I don't, I will wonder how my life would be different for the rest of my life. I would wonder if his behavior would have changed for the better. |

I think you should DEFINATELY neuter this dog. I think you are going to see a lot of changes in your dog that will make him more favorable! I have 2 boys, one is neutered and one is not. The one that is, is calmer, does not sniff other dogs, is housebroken and more laid back. The one that is not altered has some similar problems as your dog does. He sniffs other dogs privates all the time, hes very high strung also. I know getting him fixed will help him as well as me! :) |
