submissive urination Is there anyway to stop a 6 month old male from submissive urination. This usually occurs at bedtime. Lately he doesn't want to go to bed. I don't know what caused this all the sudden. I play with him, tire him out, and usually he falls asleep on my lap. When I'm ready for bed I put him in his room. If he escapes me before I get him in there or jumps the gate, he makes a beeline for my husband and jumps up in his chair and proceeds to urinate on the chair and on him. My husband is at the end of his rope. How can I get my puppy to go to bed willingly. Should I put him in before he falls asleep, should he have set bedtime routine. He's been sleeping in this room since I got him. He has his little crate, room to move around etc. Would appreciate any tips. |
I think you're considering the only route to curb it...put him to bed earlier. Actually what do you do prior to bedtime? That's really what he's picking up on...your routine. So if you switch it up a bit...by putting him to bed before your nightly routine...that may be soon enough. You could always get belly bands and have him wear those in the evening. |
You might want to keep him in his create if he is old enough. With a teddy bear to snuggle. I have 2 little dogs so I put them together in 1 create so they can snuggle. If he is old enough to stay in a kennel all night you might keep it in your room. |

Fiona used to do this all the time when we first got her, now here she is at almost 8 months old, and she no longer does this. However, my 3 year old mini dachshund, still does this, and he is neutered, it may just be something that he will do for a little big longer. Just try not to bend down to him when you first get home, just let him follow you outside! |
I agree, maybe you need to vary your routine. Your little one may not want to be by himself when you go to bed. Maybe moving his crate into your room would help. I have a routine where I turn the lights down and tell them "nite nite" and they jump up on the couch with me and go to sleep and after awhile I put them in their pen and they go into their crates. This is usually around 10 pm. |
