Omg... more about the puppymill!
 

Alot of you know that me and Amy (NewlywedWifey) both got our yorkies from a puppymill lady. Well I was just browsing one of our local newspapers online and seen that someone was advertising pom pups, and takign deposits on yorkie pups.. and I seen the area code and thought to myself, well that looks familiar. I pull out the documentation I had on the lady where we got Trixie, and low and behold its the SAME number! I'm FURIOUS on this! Does this mean the people/ASPCA didnt do anything? or she is still just going on doing this? This was posted on 8/20/2005 on the online ad, and that was just yesturday! I'm very appauled at this situation...

Do I call my local one back or maybe the one for her town and report her *again*? I mean, I never saw the *conditions* but Amy did... and knows and she has been/was investigated and warned.. but seeing this ad just makes me really think nothing was every done! :mad:

I would probably notify the advertiser that placed the ad and contact the ASPCA in her area.

So I should email the webmaster of the newspaper website first and call the SPCA? (in her area or mine?)

IF it were me - I'd bypass the newspaper till after you contact the authorities - they're just looking for ad money - once you report it again or find out why she's still in business then you could contact the paper if you want - but there's so many ways mills get around the laws and are borderline for neglect and cruelity - it's really hard getting them shut down - persistance really helps and maybe getting others to complain also would bring it more impact...Good luck !

maybe you could get the paper to help you investigate them ? It's a great human interest story - try writing the editors and complain about the mill AND see if they can help in some way -

Call your ASPCA again, let them know that there is an add in the paper. If they dont do anything about it, then call the paper.

If it were me and neither one of these routes were effective, I would get some one that I know to go check out the pups and take a camera. try to get some pics and then go from there.

Here is how the SPCA works when it comes to complaints about puppymills.

They attend and investigate, they remove any sick or injured animals. Then the owner is given a specific amount of time to bring the kennel up to standard, ONLY if she fails to meet those standards can the SPCA seek a warrant to seize the animals. They cannot just go in and scoop up all the animals if they are all being fed, watered and provided with shelter.

If she is over limit they will give her a certain length of time to bring the numbers down. If at the end of the time frame she is still over limit they can then seek a warrant to seize some animals.

The SPCA does not have the authority to just walk on to a person's property and seize animals unless those animals are sick, injured or abused. They must follow legal procedures otherwise their cases wouldn't stand up in court. It is for this reason that it is so very difficult to shut down these puppymills as so many provide the mere basics of food, water, shelter. Most are of course well over the limit they are allowed to keep but all the SPCA or local animal control can do is fine them, give them time to bring the numbers down. Usually what happens is the breeders bring the numbers down, keeping their best studs and breeding bitches and start the process all over again.

It's a vicious circle which has been ongoing for many many years. The legislation needs to be changed but I don't think any state or province is having much luck in that regard.

Talk to the SPCA, find out what the status of the case is.
