Marking vs. Peeing How can I distinguish between marking and peeing? Gus frequently pees puddles in the house even though I walk him frequently. He is neutered, and I have always assumed that he is peeing and not marking. I know that lifting the leg, and peeing a small amount or nothing is likely marking. However, where is the boundary, i.e., urine volume wise, between marking and peeing? Could puddles of urine be marking? |
How old was he when neutered? If he's making puddles it probably not marking. A dog that marks will go around and pee many places within a few minutes. My daughter's dog wasn't neutered til 14 months and he will go outside to the potty then come in and mark the couch, the rug etc. but I always keep a belly band on him indoors. |
Gus was neutered at 9 months. Neutering did not change his behavior. He does not mark/pee many places in a few minutes. I did not think he was marking, but wanted to confirm. |
Marking is usually 1 tablespoon or less on a small dog, and, I believe, always accompanies leg lifting, but not positive about this. Joey's vet wanted to neuter him at 6 months because he felt the longer you wait the more marking becomes established. Joey never marks in the house, but he marks when he goes on walks, and sometimes it's every few feet, and sometimes, I don't even think a drip comes out. |
Ramsey wants to clarify an issue....you do not have to cock your leg in order to mark...and SHE should know. ;) |

Lol, that's funny I was wondering about that because you told me she marks. I just assumed she lifted her leg. |

Ramsey has always marked....a little pee...a lot of places. Reese does not mark....and Reggie has marked since age 5 months. |

Honestly I think marking is a problem for males who are around unaltered females. It's that time...they want to really establish their territory...whether indoors or out. None of mine mark inside my house. |
