Newbie question Hi guys! First, let me say, this is a wonderful site. Bailey and myself have learned so much from everyone. Now for my question...Bailey was 9 wks old yesterday. I got her at 6 wks. old. She weighed 1lb 3oz. She eats well. Her belly is getting fatter and fatter, but she isnt getting any longer or taller..is this normal? Is she just going to be a butterball? She goes to the vet on Monday, but I was just wondering if its normal to only get bigger in the belly!!! |
Have you weighed her recently? I'm thinking she's growing...but at that age...it's slight so you don't "see" it. Btw, we love pictures. I like to see her. |
Welcome to YT!!:) |
Six weeks is very young to be separated from her mother, she may need to be dewormed. At nine weeks she should no longer have the characteristic Buddha Belly. When a puppy has worms the abdomen becomes distended and growth slows because the parasite is consuming a large portion of the caloric intake. This sounds terrible but is very common and easily treated. deworming begins at two weeks and is repeated every two weeks through week twelve. Be sure to take a stool sample with you to the vet visit. It's a good idea to weigh your puppy every couple of days to monitor growth. She should grow steadily through the sixteenth week and then slow considerably. After the sixteenth week growth can be sporadic and disproportionate, continuing through the first two years. |
