Belly Bands
 
So, I was advised to get a belly band because the Yorkie I might adopt marks in the house. I put in on him and its fine, but when I took it off to give him a bath and it was full of pee. It makes me wonder how many times he marked when I didn't see him, as he was always under supervision. At least now it isn't going in the house. Well now I'm thinking, does he think he is marking in the house? Wouldn't the belly band make him pee in the house even though it isn't necessarily on the house, thus teaching him it is ok to pee in the house? He seems unaffected by the pee touching him. It kind of all soaks into the pad.

He is getting neutered in 4 days (weds). Hopefully that will help. He marked so much it soaked through the pad and onto the band (now I have to wash it). It isn't pee since I take him out every hour. He just marked so many times. I have to admit, I was not keeping a close eye on him. Before he was NEVER out of sight. Now I let him out of sight sometimes since I know he has a belly band.

A belly band is a little piece of fabric that you put a pad in and it goes around their waist and privates so that when they mark it doesn't go on your carpet/walls.

I did not have him checked for a urinary tract infection. He is a year old and is not neutered and this is probably why he marks and does other things. He is not my dog, I am having a trial period with him because I might adopt him. He has a lot of issues that go along with not being neutered, so he is getting neutered on Wednesday. They are doing tests to make sure he is healthy before he gets neutered.

The reason I mentioned UTI is that frequent urination is a symptom. So, he can either be marking, have a UTI, behavior issue, etc.

UTI is checked with a uninalysis, and treated with antibiotics.

If he has a UTI, the problem will continue after neutering.

ok, so you decided to neuter him. i recommend writing down a list of questions you would like to ask the vet, so you can ask all your questions and not forget. you can also mention the UTI just to make sure you know.

Is the UTI something that they can do before the neuter? Or is it a longer test that needs a separate appointment? If it is a UTI would the anesthesia be unsafe? Well, I'm not really sure how serious a UTI is or why they are caused. I would appreciate a link to a website or a short explanation. I will call the vet first thing Monday about this but I was hoping to get him neutered Weds so I have five days completely with him. Thank you.

Thanks, and are you talking about questions to make sure they are a good vet? I have researched a lot and they had the best reviews and explained everything to me on the phone about the neuter and not feeding him the night before and morning of. They even tolerated me calling back three times because I was unsure what time would work for my parents and that I accidentally hung up on them. They were really nice, helpful, and definitely are experienced. I am not worried about that.

I'd call the vet's office, describe the problem with urination, and ask if Panne should have a urinalyis for a possible UTI.

If you bring in a urine sample in the morning, the vet should have the results the same day.

UTI may be due to bacteria, and is treated with antibitics.

Also, it may take weeks or months to see a change due to the neutering.

what i meant was if you had any questions about your dog, you can make sure you ask the vet at that time. i usually have SO MANY questions for my vet that if i don't write down the questions, i tend to forget something.

i am glad that you found a vet that you feel comfortable with. i live in san jose, so if your vet doesn't work out for you i can recommend the vet that i go to. he is located in milpitas, i am not sure if that is too far for you or not? anyways, i might as well just tell you the name of the clinic, it's called calaveras verterinary clinic. i like dr. anderson, and they get a lot of good reviews. you can check them out if you like.

LOL!!! That is the vet I'm going to! It is 20 minutes away from where I live but it had the best reviews, best prices, and the best costumer service so it is worth the longer drive :). It isn't that far, but there are probably 20 other vets that are closer. I was quoted $1000 JUST for the neuter at the two places about a block from my house (strange, why there are two terrible ones so close). They also had bad reviews. At Calaveras it was $200 something for the neuter at $20-60 for baby teeth removal, plus they had all the good reviews. Thank you for the suggestion. Makes me feel better :).

I will let you guys know what they say on Monday. One thing to note is he has lived in a very clean apartment his entire life, without any other pets (except when he was little he played with a Pit Bull). He never really went on walks except outside to go pee. I'm not sure if that means anything but he didn't really have contact with other animals. Obviously humans bring bacteria into the household, but I'm not really sure what kind of bacteria causes a UTI. I'll do some research on it.

From what you've described the odds are that he does not have a UTI.

LOL! that's so funny! yes, they are very good, and dr. anderson is really nice. they get really busy there though!

i think it's strange that calaveras is such a good clinic AND they charge less than others, even though those other clinic do not even get good reviews. that's odd!

I would say that he is marking , with 4 boys I know this well, I can't even bring anything new in the house (if I sit it on the floor)that wouldn't be marked:rolleyes: they mark everything, thank goodness for bellybands:D

it seems he has developed a bad habit. the surgery may not stop it.
