Neutering my Morkie? I have a male Morkie (Maltese and Yorkie mix) and he is going to be 6 months in December, (i don't want to rush getting him neutered) but I would like to know if it really a good thing to do and if he will be okay if he gets it done. I know all puppies are different and will have different reactions to the surgery, but what are some of you or a friends experience like? :animal-pa any comments will be appreciated :D Thank you!!! |
I got chachi done at 7 mos and he had no problems with the surgery whatsoever. In fact I had to slow him down he was running and jumping around the night he came home |
6-7 months is a good time to have them spayed/neutered. I have heard some vets recommend even 5 months for neutering. I have girls, and spayed Emma at 6 months and Milli at 7 months (we had to get her weight up to 4 lbs first). Both had routine surgeries and were acting more like their normal little yorkie-selves by the next day. They just took it easy for the first night at home. |

Yes! It's the right thing to do! He will be happier and healthier after being neutered! Please make sure you do the full blood panel prior to the surgery. Most vets offer a basic and comprehensive bloodwork panels, make sure you opt for the most comprehensive test. I don't know how prone Morkies are to liver problems, but I would probably do a bile acid test as well, which will show indications of MVD or liver shunt. |
Hi socerprincessx3, I don't remember seeing you on YT before and I just want to say WELCOME. I have a Morkie girl (the brown one in my avatar) that is 11 days younger than your Oreo, and I'd love to see more pics of him. I have a Yorkie girl too and adore both of them. Neutering at this age is the best thing for many reasons, and like the other posters I'd say be sure to have pre-op blood work done. Good luck, and I hope to see more of Oreo on here. |
My Morkie boy was neutered when he was 6 months old. I was extremely nervous and cried when I dropped him off. When my Yorkie baby girl got spayed I was a lot more relaxed since I had gone through it with him already. I got pre-op bloodwork every time. |
Thank you for all your help and yes I am new to YT. I will definitely get it done now that i know he wont be super upset after it is done. I will be getting more pictures as well if he would just sit still for one second!! :) I will also ask my vet about the pre-op blood work! |

Neutering is the thing to do according to so many vets and he could very possibly make a better pet if he has it done (not running after girls in heat and possibly not marking, etch.). There are health benefits to the surgery. What is rarely talked about are the health risks and there are some. Some say the health risks in neutering outweigh the benefits whereas spaying has so many health benefits, it is an easier decision. I think this is something that takes research and it is a very personal decision. It's important to know the health benefits and risks for both sides. Now if he is going to be left outside alone, then it may very well be best because we already have a pet overpopulation problem. That said, if I had a male, I'd probably have it done because I wouldn't want to deal with certain behaviors, etc. |
After multiple blood tests, we had Gucci neutered at 7 months. He was VERY sleepy the afternoon of surgery and morning after, but by mid afternoon was up and running like he'd never had surgery. I watched him carefully for a couple of days to make sure he didn't get the stitches dirty or wet. |
