Silky coat or cottony coat?? I posted a thread a few days ago about my dogs hair looking like a greaseball 1 day after a bath. So today as I was searching some other posts I noticed a lot of threads asking about greasy coats. I also noticed people stating that some dogs have cottony coats and some have silky coats, what is the difference? I was once told by a silky breeder that yorkies and silkys are two types different dogs, is that what is meant when saying cottony or silky coats? I am confused, my Bia looks like a yorkie pup, she has all the same color markings as most do, but because her hair is greasy looking does that mean she is not a yorkie but a silky terrier? |

Silk coat is one that naturally reflect the light , even after few days without a bath . Here is an example of one of mine . |
1 Attachment(s) Silky Terriers are a individually recognized breed, separate from Yorkshires. The reference to silky/soft/cottony is made in regard to texture of the yorkie coat. The cottony coats feel warm to touch, do not shine and mat very easily. Silk coats feel like cool water running over your hand and reflect light. |
O I C now....I got it...thanks so much for explaing this to me. Does anyone have a picture of a full grown yorkie with a cottony coat?? I would like to see the difference. Thanks! ;) |
Me too - I'd like to see a pix of a full grown Yorkie with a cottony coat. Anyone??? |

This pic is a close up of her - (sorry for the bad pic) I looked for better up close shots but couldn't find one...She's NOT brushed and was playing all day...but THIS is what her hair looks like if I don't keep it groomed The Stop Puppy Mills pic is her all brushed and nice and clean :) |
1 Attachment(s) I think Sydney has a combination of silky and cotton.....Is that possible? |
Yes , it is possible . |
When do you know How old does the dog have to be before you know if they have a silky or cottony coat? My puppy is 4 months old and her coat is pretty hard to maintain. She always has knots and when I bathe her I have to comb her out while the conditioner is still on or it's very difficult to comb her after the bath. Is this normal? |

I do brush her, though not as often as I should. She does really well with it until I try to brush her legs or around her tail and butt and then she cries like I'm trying to kill her. I spray detangler on her but it doesn't help much. I'm going to try CC when I get paid on the 15th. Maybe that will help. |
Oh, thanks for the fast response. I hope it is just a stage. |
What about Dublin?? 2 Attachment(s) At about what age do they start to look silky? Dublin's hair has that greasy look to it even right after a bath and brushing. Is that the sign of a silky or cottony coat? Also, he is almost 6 months old, and his hair seems awfully short compared to others I see at the same age. And lately the hair on his body feels dry to the touch. Is that a stage? (He's just getting in his adult teeth if that matters.) I've been using the CC Day to Day on him, and brushing with Ice on Ice. Anything else I should be doing? The first picture was taken yesterday right after bath time, and the second one I just took. Can you tell anything from them? (Note: the green 'silky glow' his eyes... er.. eye has.) |
So you just answered one of my questions, too... (I'm a bit slow witht the whole picture thing...) I guess he's about at that age then. His hair doesn't mat and is easy to comb, but that could be just because there isn't much of it!! |

With Cotton coats - they have the look of thick hair - Actually Chanel HAS alot of hair & it grows really fast ... but being cotton makes it look like more. |
Thanks, Villette. Not that it matters, I'm just curious. He's adored no matter what he looks like!! His hair is prettiest when he's asleep and I brush it. For the moment that he is still, it looks so shiny and soft. Once he moves it's in an uproar again. LOL Guess I better get used to it looking messy!! |

Polly is beautiful . She have a superb little head . She looks like Venus when she was a pup . Kellie was a real ugly duckling when she was a pup , I was really doubting that she was a real Yorkie even if the pedigree was saying ch sire and dam but what a surprize to see her change . You can see her coat on # 2 . |
1 Attachment(s) People at the YTCA meeting said Coco has a silky coat. What do you guys think? This is a great thread, because I don't know the difference (well didn't)..hehe |
She does have a gorgeous coat. Maddie my oldest has a coat like that, and she is so easy to take care of even with a full coat. Do you think Poll y is going to have one? I hope so she is a little toot and not a lady. She loves to be oustide rolling around in everything. I am a believer about the eye color to. Maddie has green eyes in pics and Rudy had Red eyes. Haven't got a pic were Polly's eyes show a color. |
Coat?? I'm glad to see that there has been a discussion on the coat of yorkies. Since, I'm in the process of getting my yorkie I've heard so many different theories on their coats. I heard that if the coat is like cotton then it's not a "pure" yorkie and if the coat is silky it is. My question is this...when it's time to purchase my puppy which is better; a silky coat or cotton? I'm so confused, because I don't know which is best because I think they are all so adorable. |
Greasy? What is this greasy hair thing? The top of Susan's head looks greasy sometimes even right after a bath. I don't know what causes it. I think she has a cotton coat. It's really thick and feels fluffy and soft. It's growing much faster than her sister's. Actually right now (at a little over 4 months) Susan is prettier than Little Bit because Little Bit's hair is so thin and sparse. But I think Little Bit is going to have the silk coat. I don't really know. I don't have any experience; I'm just judging by what I read. |
Vainchick, how old is Coco? She looks exactly like my mother's Little Bit! If Coco has a silky coat, them Little Bit probably does, too. |
