Is my puppy overweight?????? I just got the final numbers from the breeder and she told me at 8 weeks the puppy was 2.2 ounces, 7 inch neck, 9 inch belly, 7 inches from nape of neck to her butt. Today she is 12 weeks old and she said she was 3 pounds, 7.5 around neck, 10.5 around tummy and 9 inches from nape of neck to her butt. The mother is 4.5 pounds and the father is 5 or 6 pounds (cant remember). She sounds heavy to me. Any thoughts??:confused: |
No puppies don't get overweight, they are the weight they are meant to be. You don't have to worry about fat until the puppy is at least 8 months old. Most breeders say that the parents are the weight you mention, and it's not always the case, but just because the parents are smaller, this doesn't mean that the offspring will be small, the grandparents could have been bigger. A rule of thumb is to double the 12 week size, and give or take a pound, will be the adult size. |
sounds like she will be a healthy 6lb'er like her father!:) |
Sounds like she will be about 6 lbs and thats a great weight. My Jewels is 6 lbs and she small enough to carry but big enough that shes sturdy and I dont worry about her getting hurt from jumping or anything |
I don't think that he's to big either. Tyke was 2 lbs at 12 weeks and at 15 or 16 weeks he was 3 lbs. Now he's 5 1/2 monthes old weighs 4 lbs. maybe this will help. But i don't know what size his parents were.:) |
She sounds perfect. :) |
She sounds perfect to me. When you get her home you will not be able to believe how small a 3lb puppy is, and a six pound adult to me is very small. My Shylah weighs seven pounds, and people cannot believe that she weighs that much. The vet tech always weighs her about three times just to make sure because she looks so small. Brynna who is her littermate weighs nine pounds, and is according to my vet is the proper weight for her frame. :) Tammy |
