Flying w/ a "medium sized" yorkie To admins/moderators - I will post this in traveling as well. It just seems like General Discussion gets the most traffic. I plan on flying with Sasha for the first time next month and have been looking at carriers. Most airlines state that the carrier can not exceed 8 inches in height. I have been looking at the Alex Dog Carrier by Kwigy-Bo but because Sasha is about 6.5 pounds (and could still be growing) and about 10 inches long I think the larger one would be better and roomier for her. The problem is the the height is 11 inches and exceeds the airline's dimensions! I checked with other carriers and the sizes that would fit her the best are all between 10-11 in in height. She's not a a tiny little thing like the 3-4 lb'ers but she's not exactly a "teapot" yet either. I don't want to have to buy a smaller carrier that she will "just" fit in. I don't fly that often so it would be a waste of money. I'm so torn with what to do. :( Any thoughts, suggestions, or advice from those with medium sized yorkies who fly would be very helpful! I am leaving work but will come back to check any replies later. Thanks in advance! :) |
I would keep in mind that a soft-sided carrier will squish down to fit under the seat if necessary. I have flown with Rory (9 lbs) in a Coach carrier that measures: 16 1/2 (W) x 12 1/2 (H) tall x 9 1/2 (D) according to the website. I think depending on the type of plane you will have more or less room too. Some flights I've practically straddled the bag and other flights it seemed to slide right in without any squishing. Hopefully that helps! I know Delta has a sherpa carrier they recommend that I think would definitely fit Sasha, and probably work on other airlines as well. Sherpa's Pet Trading Company - The Original Soft Side Pet Carrier Good luck! |
I fly with Lola all the time and she is 9 lb. the original sherpa in medium size is fine--not the prettiest but allowed by all the airlines and fits under the seat fine. Look at the plan configuration. If you are flying an embrear the carrier will not fit under the aisle, get a window seat to be safe. morrislaz |
That is exactly the carrier I have and I am wondering if I should use it again or try taking Lily in her new Vera Bradley carrier?? Does anyone know if the Vera Bradley carriers are airline approved? I want her to be comfortable but that sharpe is very cramped under the seat too? I leave on Wed. this week......THANKS!! |
Even some of the soft sided ones have hard corners so make sure your top corners are also soft. I fly with one from Walmart that I can squish the top down. |
