Now this is the third time I write this (had some issues editing my response, had a typo and misspelt Rocky's name) ... lots of drama with trying to write a small post! :P

Hi everyone,

My little guy Rocky was neutered last week and I feel bad about causing him any pain. Some people have been giving me a bit of a hard time for doing it (I don't know if they are just joking or not but I feel bad already). I know that it is said that the procedure is best for them in the long run though with aggression and marking. Rocky also had four baby teeth removed that did not come out and also was microchipped so the poor guy was sore all over! We got all the extra pain medication we could though and I don't think he's been in pain at all. He has been playing with his cone on and being a real trouper. I had a dog as a child who was not neutered so I am not sure what to expect behavior-wise and have a few questions. Any advice/experience on the following would be much appreciated.

Do neutered Yorkies lift their leg eventually or does neutering prevent this behavior? We train him to go potty inside on a Wiz Dog/pee pad so it could be a challenge for me if he is lifting his leg and thus not aiming on the pad as much with a squat. Rocky just turned 6 months before his surgery and I think that was the best time to get it done. I am not sure if his skin will be saggy afterwards or if it will tighten. Right now it is quite bruised - poor guy!

Hot Rod was neutered at 6 1/2 mos. He had never really lifted his leg but 1 time and it wasn't even really a lift-outdoors. He is 14 1/2 mos now and has started to lift his leg for about 1 month now. He is so cute, he will stand by the stop sign and lift the opposite leg. :p The other day he lifted his leg on a giant leaf on the ground, ha, ha.

I have only seen him lift his left once in the house on his pad. It is in the family room where we always are so I can see him. I have read that you can put a water filled water bottle in the middle of the pad to give him something to aim for. So far he hasn't done it again.

He had 14 teeth removed at the same time and I was not given any pain meds. I should have gotten some. I think that he was in some pain and I felt awful for him. Fortunately he healed from the surgery well and we had no issues with the incision. Good luck with your little one. :)

Chachi starting lifting after the neuter

My Coco is 18mo. old and was neutered at 6mo. he still doesn't lift his leg yay!!:woof: I hope it stays this way as he is paper trained also. He is the calmest baby. When Pebbles who is 8mo. comes over and takes his bone he is chewing on he just moves on to something else. He has a great disposition. I don't know if it is because of the neutering but I do know he doesn't do the dance on your leg anymore again yay!:woof:

Unrelated, but I have a female puppy that occasionally lifts her leg to go when we walk. Haha, girl prob. learned it from the neighborhood dogs... kinda funny when she is all dressed up, bow in hair

Thanks for all the great responses. It seems like it will be likely that he will do some leg-lifting, but not 100% guaranteed. Cute to hear about your little guy's as well.

I hope it doesn't hurt when the stiches come out next week. Man, he does not like being at the vet's AT ALL anymore.

What some people do about the pee pad if their dog lifts is take a 2 liter coke bottle and fill it with water or sand and wrap a pee pad around it and put it on the pee pad so they have a pole to pee on

I think this is a good option, but may be a bit messy. We will watch him carefully though, better to have something to aim at rather than aim wherever!! ;)

Is there an age when they usually start to lift their legs? I will watch for it carefully but I don't think it will start until after 1 year or maybe 1 year and a half.

Chachi started at 8 mos

8 months!!!! OK! Good to know, now I will be on the lookout around Valentine's Day. :)
