Pet Insurance? (Yes, No, Maybe or No way) 1 Attachment(s) I'm considering Pet Insurance for our two Yorkies (3yrs, 2.9yrs old). Misha had a bout with HGE this past summer and it was very expensive. Has anybody had any experience, good, or bad with Pet Insurance. |
I didn't get pet insurance for Squirt now 12 years old, and never had any medical expenses other than routine exams and shots. I decided to get pet insurance for Gus, because he didn't seem quite right (frequent urination & excessive thirst). Also, the insurance plan I got covered some of the neutering cost. The insurance, I have, only covers part of the vet bills. I'm hoping to break even this year, i.e., cost of insurance equals amount paid by insurance, but my vet bills have already exceeded what I paid for insurance. If you can afford insurance, it's a good idea. So, I say Yes. |
Maya had frequent urination & excessive thirst, it turned out to be a urinal track infection, some pills for a week and it was cured. |

I didn't get it and I wish I did. It's good to have when you run into some problems! |
I have it on both of my dogs. Its good, but the bad part, is with mine,I have to pay for the bill up front and then they usually reimburse me about 80 percent of what I paid. With my little 2 year old yorkie, she has a lot of health problems, so I am glad that I got it. Make sure you get it before they have any pre-existing conditions, or they usually wont pay for it. Good luck in your decision! |
i never got pet insurance b/c it's so much of a hassle with all the paperwork. i do have a wellness plan from Banfield, but it's not insurance. |
I have VPI for Haruka... I probably don't need it because Haruka is very healthy but I just want to have it just in case. VPI doesn't cover anything that is pre-condition... I don't mind paying monthly fee but I don't like paying tons of money together. So it is nice to see the money back after faxing the claim.... |
I am very interested in this as well. It is funny because my boyfriend and I were discussing insurance today for Bella. But I feel lost when I start looking, I don't know which plans are reliable or scams. |
I too am interested but havent heard enough about any of the companies to commit. I have had vet bills come to $8000 in just one month so I think it would be great if the insurance company was legit and payed out. I always hear about pet ins. companies just not paying out writing it off as pre existing or something else. So I have been worried about wasting my money. |
I have ASPCA pet insurance. I'm not sure they are the best, but I'm not sure what's better. They have been good about paying, but their schedule does not match what my vet charges. I heard PetPlan is good too. Before I renew with ASPCA, I'll check out PetPlan in more detail. I'll renew with either ASPCA or go with PetPlan. |
I just purchased insurance on Jezebel. Gypsy Rose is almost 3 and we've been lucky so far! She is a bigger hearty girl, weighing in at 12lbs! Jez is 9 weeks so time will tell. After reasearching, I was looking at Petplan & Trupanion. I went with Trupanion: Welcome to Trupanion - Pet Insurance Made Easy for the coverage in case she turns out sickly or fragile.. all babies are different!;) They cover hereditary & congenital conditions as long as your pet was not showing signs or been previously diagnosed. This was a BIG selling point for me after hearing some of the sad news here. The catch is your baby has to be .. well .. a baby (under 1 yr). They do have a parent company out of Canada. It pays 90% (of the actual bill NOT a "fee/benefit schedule". You would have to pay upfront unless your vet will agree to direct billing from my understanding. All in all, I liked the peace of knowing we have the coverage, they are rated well with Pet Insurance Reviews, and give you flexibilty with the ded. |
Has anyone heard of happytailsmembership.com It is a discount program for vets. You can use any vet and get reimbursed through this membership. My questions are simply do they reimburse you in a timely manner and are there restrictions on what is reimbursed. |
Well I dont have insurance but I do have my baby on a plan at Petsmart. And I love it. He gets his teeth cleaned once a year and everything. All visits are paid for. It works well for me. :D |
I purchased a Pet Plan plan shortly after getting Buster. He is only six months old and I have yet to submit a claim (thankfully). I got the very basic plan which would cover any large bills. I don't mind his routine visits, it's if anything else that would ever go wrong that scares me. I'd be too afraid to get caught trying to figure out how to pay for his medical if he really needed it so I bought coverage right away. I made a point to get it right after his first vet visit since I knew he had a clean bill of health. |
