I miss my baby It's 8:40 AM and I just dropped Archie off at the vet's for his neutering. He had pre-anesthetic blood work done on Saturday and his neutering is today. We can pick him up tomorrow. The house feels so empty without him! And I had to leave him in a cage, which he HATES. But...I asked them to show me where he's going to be for the night, and they assured me that he was going to get a wee wee pad, and they will take him to the dog run to go to the bathroom. They took me into the surgical area, etc., and showed me the operating table and everything. They also said they'll call after surgery, and told me that there will be a nurse with him through the night, and explained to me that he will be getting a sedative to get the endotrachial tube in, and a gas anasthetic (isoflurane). They will wake him up right after surgery and give him fresh oxygen. Then, he'll be on pain meds. I also asked if they could please remove any baby teeth left over. I'm still really nervous, even though I trust the hospital and the staff there. My boyfriend and I had made a pact that if they don't let us in the back to see the surgical area and where he's going to stay for the night, then we wouldn't leave him there. There was a little yorkie next to him that was also scheduled for surgery. A cute little brownish one who had a broken leg or something. When Archie comes home, he has to wear the collar around his head for 10-14 days to keep him out of the stitches. Awwww...My first night away from my baby. It's sad... :( Please say a little prayer that everything goes well. |
Lickthestar , I will be thinking about your Archie and you. Hope everything goes well and Archie get's back to himself in no time. Newf and I will say a prayer for you both. Keep us posted!!! God Bless !!! HUGGGSSS & KISSSESS!!! :) |
Poor Archie! I know this is hard for you all ... but he will bounce back in no time! It was much harder for Patrick & me than it was for Toto ... fortunately, we didn't have to leave her overnight! I think Dr. Lucy knew that she would have to give me a "blankie" too!! :o Keep us updated ... we will say a little prayer for you all! |
toby is going to go through it in two weeks (and so will i i guess....lol....) why are they keeping him overnight?????...... the vet i go to is a clinic, but when i have taken my dogs to the normal vet and they wanted to keep them overnight, i always asked if someone was going to be sitting by his cage watching them.....and if not, then they arent going to get the "observation" that they are intitially staying for and it is much better if they come home because they will be comfortable, secure, and watched 24-7...... this is just my take on the situation, it seems when they keep them for observation they never really "observe" they just leave or walk by the cage..... (if they have an iv drip or somethign to stabalize them i can understand the overnight stay, but i am very wary of vets that like to "get more money")..... im sure you trust your vet and that it is a matter of safety, but to all those newbies on teh site, be a little careful of who you choose as youre vetrinarian..... not a vets are equal!!!!!!! |
Oh I know how you must be a nervous wreck, as i felt the same exact way when Schatzie went in for surgery... It sounds like you have a great vet. I can tell that are taking your feelings into consideration and trying to make you feel at ease during this nervous time. Let us know how his surgery went, we will be thinking of you! Hugs to Archie from little Schatzie and prayers too! |
I'm calling today to set Carter up for his neutering. As soon as they can schedule him, he'll have the same procedure but will be home that night as long as he has no complications. He'll have at least 2 teeth removed - lower canines. My heart goes out to you because I know I'd feel empty if Carter wasn't always in my feet! Hope to read tomorrow that you're full of smiles and happiness! |
It's tough leaving pets behind at the vet! It looks like you did great homework lickthestar, so I'm sure Archie will come home safe and happy. So many neuterings coming up!! Orinskye is having Toby done soon too -- Carter's Mom, hope your baby makes a speedy recovery. And lickthestar, give Archie extra kisses from us! |
Thinking of little Archie and wishing him a speedy recovery.....................Cindy |
It's morning! It's morning! What time do you get to go pickup your baby? Puppy Kisses Galore!! Lisa |
You must be SO excited to be getting your baby back today :) I hope everything went well!! |
Thanks everyone! My boyfriend is going to the vet to pick Archie up right now. I think they wanted to keep him overnight just to make sure everything is OK. The vet called right after the surgery yesterday to tell us that everything went well, and he was sitting up and everything, looking around at everything that was going on. I won't be here when Archie gets home (i have to leave in 6 minutes), but I'll see him at 3. I'm sure the E collar will be funny looking, but I can't wait to spend the whole evening with Archie. I have a cough and cold so I'm really really looking forward to curling up on the couch and watching TV with Archie!!! I'm so happy that everything went well. I hope he's not in pain, and I hope he can pee properly... As for the staying overnight part, some private vets will probably suggest leaving the pets overnight because god forbid something happens that evening, that's a major lawsuit. So, I can understand them wanting to do that and by going to a private vet, I implicitly agreed to it. This vet never made me sign a contract saying that I will NOT sue them if they did anything wrong, so in return for that, they will take as much precaution as they possibly can as a defense if there is a lawsuit. Orinskye---I agree with you...newbies should be very careful of the vets they are choosing, and the contractual relationships they are getting into! |
congrads archie isnt a man nomore lol but the surgery only takes 15 mins and 20 mins for a female and they only need to stay for about 3 more hours just to make sure he wakes up even when you pick them up them its like they never had it done oh well i guess every vet is different what did they use to close him stitches or glue ?? glad your baby ok ive been threw it 3 times so i know how you felt :D |
Hi. Just checking in to see how Archie is doing. I bet he just wants to curl up on the couch with you and rest. Schatzie sends hugs to Archie :p |
Thanks. Archie has the e-collar so he keeps bumping into things, but I'm the sad one...I feel very bad for putting him through the surgery, even though I know it's for his own benefit, but it's still really sad. He's just got this big eyes saying, please take this collar off of me! When he came home, he was so excited, and went into every room to make sure things hadn't changed. He can't scratch his ear, so I try to do that for him, and he was very very hungry. The vet said that he refused to eat the food they gave him, so he had a big feed when he came home. I'm a bit sick, too. He's been sleeping a lot today and I think this will continue until his pain meds are finished. I just hope I can keep him off the couch, which isn't really easy because it's his couch. He's got stiches but I think they're the dissolvable kind, and the incision is very very tiny. he wants to play with his friend next door, but he is not allowed...although I know he misses her a lot. |
