Cold weather & Yorkies Does your Yorkie get used to cold weather? It is so cold already here in Michigan. Will he get used to it? Does anyone have suggestions on what to do for a puppy going outside in cold weather? What do you do when it snows?! |
No, he wont get used to it. My vet told me that small breeds, like Yorkies (mine is a Yorkie mix) just do not have the body mass to deal with cold temperatures. So now, my vet basically legitimized me shopping for and clothing my pup! LOL I have a puffy coat for her for the real cold, but mostly just put her in hoodies or sweaters. Plenty of YT people have stores on here and custom make cute clothes at great prices for our lil pups. You can see the list of stores in the 'product review' section. I also layer - long sleeved t's with hoodies or a jacket...its like having a baby to play dress up with! When its cold and wet, they should go, do their business and come right in and make sure you towel off and blowdry wet paws and legs. Make sure your baby doesn't step in antifreeze or salt to keep the ice away - both are toxic and the salt can burn delicate paw pads. For that, they sell disposable little rubber socks, if you aren't into buying shoes. I am not a 'dog shoe' person right now, but I may be a convert! Its our first winter up north! |
I need my hubby to call your vet...lol because he does not understand that yorkies cant take the cold...and fights with me when im getting my lil girl layered up |
LOL. My ex felt that way - but watch the poor things shiver when exposed to the cold vs bigger, hairier dogs whose thick coats and muscle mass keep them nice and toasty. Men seem to be anti dressing up dogs...I don't understand. Its not like I am trying to put a coat on a German Shepherd!:p These are little dogs! They would not survive the elements if left in the cold! Humans bred these dogs down in size, creating a breed that is pretty vulnerable without our help! Explain to him that Yorkies have 'hair' not fur' It basically keeps them as warm as the top of our heads with no hat in the winter...plus being so tiny, it takes a great deal of energy to keep warm. And, naked, if its snowing or raining, their bellies get wet and freezing! And tell him that if he wants your furkid outside with no clothes, he is banned from wearing a winter hat and gloves. He should be able to tough it out, if your Yorkie has too! LOL |

And...another good article. Dog Owner's Guide: Cold Weather Complications This is actually serious! Also, did you know that canine police and dogs used in units in the army actually wear protective gear? Weather its boots or even sunglasses, professionals know that extreme temperatures can be as rough on dogs as they are on people. And I used to live in the midwest. Thats a BITTER winter!! I am making Ella Bean pajamas because lately i find her shivering in her sleep and I take her and put her under the blanket to snuggle to me. We live in the finished basement of a very old townhouse, so not all the windows close all the way and we get quite a chill! |

I love this conversation...well I'll tell you that it was probably in the high 60's this morning and Teddi was wearing a jacket on our walk but half way through our walk she started shaking so I picked her up and carried her the rest of the way home. She was cold. You can tell if they are cold if you pinch the top of their ears with your fingers and if they are cold then the dog is cold. I can't imagine if we lived in a cold state!! |
Not only do Yorkies get cold because of their size but they have no undercoat. Dogs who shed have an undercoat that protects them from the cold. Yorkie do not. They need protective clothing when going out in the cold. If your baby is shivering after coming back inside, that indicates it's time for clothing... |
Another piece of info I just read - Because Yorkie ears stand up, they release heat since they aren't close to the body and apparently dog ears maintain the body's temperature...so as Ronylynn said, if the ears are cold - time to bundle up! It looks like I'll be investing in some booties this winter for Ella Bean! |
I've tried explaining it over and over again....some men just dont understand that yorkies are not just regular dogs. Our sheltie has a very thick coat and can have fun in the snow the whole time...cutie is already shivering out of the door(jacket, sweater underneath) so I have to keep her under my jacket which I dont even mind because she is all about 3 lbs . |
What's the feeling on boots? Do or don't? I don't want her getting frozen ice in her paws or worse, frostbite!:( |
I want booties for my yorkie but she is 5 years old and I think it is too late for me to start introducing it to her. I have seen creams for there pads for the heat and winter. When I lived in florida the concrete was so hot that I didnt dare let her stand on it. But now its the same thing but with cold weather. I dont know what to do :( we are very outdoorsy people and I need to find the exact way to keep her warm enough with me holding her and her alone...suggestions? |
I am thinking the same thing. I got Ella Bean in Florida, this is her first winter and she woouldn\'t walk outside on hot sidewalks....hmmm.... |
